Update on the Venus advert featuring the Scottish Fold cat.

I got in touch with Procter and Gamble who have said they are going to adapt the advert so that the cat no longer has folded ears - which is fantastic news!! (We are more powerful as individuals than we realise if we put our mind to it)

I’ve also asked Procter and Gamble to sign up to the IHA Responsible Use of Animals in the Media pledge to commit to only featuring animals with healthy body types in their adverts - and I really hope they do.

The types and breeds of dog and cat people are in advertising and the media is HUGELY influential in shaping what animals people choose to acquire.

If we truly wish to call ourselves pet lovers we should not be choosing to deliberately breed animals with body shapes that cause them harm.

could you commit to implementing the IHA Pledge across the board?

Why the uproar and media attention when a prolific s***m donor is found to have fathered hundreds of children.

And when male dogs are used to father hundreds of puppies - with the similar harmful implications in terms of genetics - it’s considered acceptable, nobody attempts to stop it being done and termed a ‘popular sire’.

Discuss.

There is literally zero evidence that rabbit ears act as wormers. It’s a marketing tactic.

Yours sincerely, a tired vet.

Rabbits can hide pain REMARKABLY well.

The Rabbit Grimace Scale looks at five facial features that may help identify pain—but do you know what to look for?

Save this video, share it with a rabbit owner, and remember: changes in eating or droppings need prompt veterinary attention.

Note: The grimace scale is an assessment aid, not a home diagnostic test. Facial features can sometimes be difficult to score, and posture, behaviour, appetite and faecal output all matter too. A rabbit that stops eating always needs urgent veterinary assessment.

What an inspiring evening at the IFAW Animal Action Awards hosted by Michaela Strachan , celebrating some exceptional people (and a dog!) making huge contributions to the world of wildlife conservation.

At a time when things can sound bleak when we talk about the state of our planet - it was encouraging to hear story after story of people dedicating their lives to protecting wild animals from all corners of the world - and making a real, tangible impact. The positive energy in the room really was palpable.

And a privilege to meet the best Labrador girl Sgiath (Skee-ah) who is the UK’s first sea-squirt hunting dog!

Great also to catch up with beaver conservation legend Sean McCormack and Dr James Greenwood and chat with all sorts of people all doing their bit to protect animals.

When you think you have seen all combinations of extreme body shape being bred for in dogs, and you come across…the velvet French Bulldog.

This dog will be predisposed to skin fold infections, eyelid disorders, corneal ulcers, airway obstruction - and I suspect an awful mix of Sharpei health issues like Sharpei fever and kidney disease, and the frenchie problems including IVDD and other animal disorders.

There is absolutely no justification for deliberately inflicting lifelong suffering on dog in this manner.

Simba will always be a special patient for me. Six years ago, this 1st birthday of his wouldn’t have been possible. 🎂

When Simba was just a few months old, he went from a playful kitten to losing his vision, losing weight, and losing his ability to balance.

The diagnosis? FIP (Feline Infectious Peritonitis).
FIP used to be considered an absolute death sentence.

I had never seen a cat survive it.

But thanks to rapid advancements in antiviral research—partly accelerated by the COVID-19 pandemic in humans —we suddenly had a breakthrough treatment called GS-441524.

Simba was the first cat I ever treated with it... and look at him now!

With his family’s dedication and care, Simba fought through his disease, regained his vision, and is now a happy, healthy FIP SURVIVOR—a term that didn’t even exist just a few years ago.

Drop a 🎂 in the comments to wish Simba a belated happy 1st birthday, and share this with a fellow cat lover who needs some good news today! 🐾❤️

I didn’t anticipate this would happen after telling my son about how some dogs struggle to breathe because of the way they look.

I’m not sure if the person walking the pug heard or not.

I certainly wouldn’t advocate for commandeering children to guilt trip people about their dogs! But we do need a next generation of pet owners more attuned to this issue and conscious that we should be breeding more natural body shapes for our pets.

Own up - who lets their dog sleep in bed with them 🙋. If so, ever wondered if they are actually ruining your sleep? 💤

A brand-new 2026 study tracked humans and their dogs to see who disrupts who… and the results might surprise you! (Spoiler: You might be the problem).

Do you let your dog sleep in bed?
