Myrmecocystus placodops, a remarkable honeypot ant from the deserts of North America.

In this young colony, feeding protein is essential. Despite their common name, it’s important to not overfeed them with liquid sugars at this stage and instead focus on manageable offerings of protein.

Some workers in the colony become repletes, living food stores whose abdomens can swell to incredible sizes as they are filled with liquid food. When times are tough and food is scarce, other workers can simply return to the nest and feed from them.

It’s one of the most fascinating examples of social cooperation in the ant world. Rather than storing food in a chamber, the colony stores it inside its own workers.

Nature never fails to surprise us.

Creating an outworld for your ants doesn’t have to be complicated. In fact, keeping it natural and practical is often the best approach.

The outworld is where the colony can really explore. It’s the space where workers leave the nest to forage, discover food, navigate their surroundings and interact with their environment.

Rather than leaving it completely bare, we can introduce suitable additions that give the ants more to explore. Rocks, plants, natural textures and other carefully chosen features can create a more interesting environment while encouraging natural behaviours.

The goal isn’t to fill every inch of space, but to create a small world that feels varied and gives the colony opportunities to explore as it grows.

And because these systems are modular, the setup can grow with the colony. As the empire expands, we can adapt and add to their world.

Making a home for 1,000 red ants doesn’t have to be complicated. In fact, keeping things simple is often the best approach.

A formicarium has two main parts: the nest, where the colony lives and raises its brood, and the outworld, where the workers leave the nest to explore, forage and find food.

It’s come a long way from the old toy ant farms. Modern formicariums are designed around what the colony actually needs, somewhere secure to live, a suitable environment, and enough space to grow.

For a colony of around 1,000 ants, there’s no need to overbuild it. A simple, practical setup can give them everything they need while still making it easy to observe their behaviour.

These are modular systems so when the empire grows, you can add another nest as they build.
