What a harvest for British farmers! 🌾

Britain's oilseed r**e (OSR) harvest is on track to break records, potentially exceeding 4.0 t/ha for the first time ever! This incredible yield could pump an extra £100 million into the rural economy.

It's a good time to consider OSR, particularly with the current wheat commodity price, as it offers the option to grow a profitable break crop. Although we saw good uptake for early sowing, during the current heatwave, it’s not advisable to drill.

However, the hybrid varieties we offer and have in stock offer greater vigor than conventional varieties. This means that if we see rainfall and soil conditions improve in September, hybrid OSR is a good option to include back in the rotation.,

If you have already signed up to SFI schemes, it is a good crop to integrate companion cropping (CIPM3) and no insecticides (CIPM4) to increase the profitability of the break crop.

We recently received some brilliant feedback from a dairy farmer who made the switch to Wynnstay Stellar Powder, and their experience highlights the critical role of the right milk replacer in calf health and farm efficiency.

"As with anything, no powder can make up for poor colostrum management and stockmanship. A year ago, we were having some issues with nutritional scours off the back of a skim-based powder. After some research, we found that Whey Protein-based powders might be the way to go as it is absorbed by the gut rather than clotting and passing straight through like Skim powders. So this means the calf is utilising more energy from the powder.

Since making the change to the Wynnstay Stellar Powder (Whey protein Based), feeding consistency has improved massively by having virtually no nutritional scours which has in turn prevented other problems like crypto taking hold and other challenging diseases on a large Dairy Farm. It mixes well, which is a big thing when it comes to the rearing and knowing you have got your money's worth out of the powder. This has also returned better growth rates and a healthier looking shine."

Good quality silage is your secret weapon for increasing milk production from your home-grown forage, directly impacting your bottom line.

Key Silage Success Tips:
- Timing is Everything! Don't delay your cuts. Waiting just one week can cost you 1.2 liters of milk per cow per day!

- Quality Over Quantity (Per Cut)! While it's tempting to let crops "bulk up," more frequent cutting throughout the season generally means more, higher-quality silage overall.

- Watch That Nitrogen! Longer, drier spells can lead to unused nitrogen in your grass after rain. Too much nitrogen can hinder fermentation, so it's always smart to test your grass before mowing if you're unsure.

💧 HELP KEEP OUR RIVERS CLEAN: NEW SCHEME TACKLES AGRI-PLASTIC POLLUTION! 💧

The Teifi, Tywi, Usk, and Cleddau rivers are more than just waterways; they're lifelines for farmers, wildlife, and rural communities across Wales. These incredible rivers are even designated Special Areas of Conservation, providing a vital home for rare species like otters, lamprey, salmon, and water crowfoot. But sadly, they're under threat from a mix of industrial pollution, plastic waste, and soil runoff.

HOW IT WORKS:

1. Check your eligibility - Call Birch Farm Plastics (01792 8690776) to confirm you’re eligible, operating in the scheme area.

2. Book your slot – At one of the designated Drop off Centres.

3. Save money – Thanks to Four Rivers for LIFE funding, you’ll pay less than standard recycling fees.

4. Plastics accepted – Silage wrap and film, feed/fertiliser bags, buckets, netting and twine. Plastics must be sorted by type.

5. Receive a Waste Transfer Note – Compliance & record keeping.

This is a limited-time offer - so don’t delay. Farmers outside the catchment areas are also welcome to use the centers, but the financial incentive is only for those within the scheme / listed county boundaries.

LOCATIONS: Four Rivers for LIFE Drop-Off Centres are planned for: Talsarn (Lampeter), Crymych, Llandovery, Sennybridge, Raglan, and Carmarthen. All within the four rivers catchment areas. More sites may be added based on demand.
