Spring and summer grass can be brilliant for horses… but it can also be 𝘀𝘂𝗿𝗽𝗿𝗶𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴𝗹𝘆 𝗵𝗶𝗴𝗵 𝗶𝗻 𝗰𝗮𝗹𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗲𝘀.

For many horses and ponies — especially good doers, natives and those prone to laminitis — 𝗺𝗮𝗻𝗮𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗴𝗿𝗮𝘀𝘀 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗸𝗲 𝗶𝘀 the most 𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗮𝗻𝘁 𝗽𝗮𝗿𝘁 𝗼𝗳 𝗺𝗮𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮 𝗵𝗲𝗮𝗹𝘁𝗵𝘆 𝗯𝗼𝗱𝘆 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗱𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻.

Here are a few simple grazing management strategies that can help:
🌱 Manage grass intake by monitoring turnout and pasture growth
🚧 Introduce strip grazing to control how much grass is available
🐴 Consider a grazing muzzle to reduce grass intake and allow more turnout
🔄 Use grass-free areas such as woodchip turnout pens or surfaced areas
🏇 Try a track system to encourage more movement but reduce access to grass
🌾 Provide low calorie fibre such as soaked hay or straw if grazing is restricted

Remember: forage restriction shouldn’t mean fibre restriction. Horses still need adequate fibre intake daily to support digestive health and natural behaviour.

Managing grazing alongside a balanced diet and regular body condition scoring can make a huge difference to your horse’s long-term health.
