β˜€οΈ Heat stress in calves and cattle: what to watch out for:

With the warmer weather finally here , cattle can struggle to keep cool β€” and young calves, high-yielding cows, heavily stocked groups and animals with underlying health issues can be especially vulnerable.

Signs of heat stress can include:

🌑️ Increased breathing rate or panting
πŸ’§ Drooling or excessive salivation
πŸ„ Standing more and lying less
πŸ₯› Reduced milk yield or reduced feed intake
🚰 Drinking more than usual
⚠️ Dullness, weakness or signs of collapse in severe cases

Calves may also become quieter, feed poorly, breathe faster or appear dehydrated.

What can help?

βœ… Provide plenty of clean, fresh water
βœ… Make sure there is shade and good airflow
βœ… Avoid handling, moving or transporting stock during the hottest part of the day
βœ… Keep bedding areas clean, dry and well ventilated
βœ… Monitor vulnerable animals closely, especially calves and fresh calvers

Please call your vet if an animal is very dull, struggling to breathe, not feeding, scouring, dehydrated, collapsed, or if you are concerned that heat stress is affecting the group.

Early advice can make a big difference, speak to us for more advice if you are concerned.

Thank you to everyone who joined us on Wednesday for our Calf Health in Practice – On-Farm Discussion at High Park Farm led by Vets Miriam & Adam.

A big thank you to Andrew and Pete Hockridge for kindly hosting us, and to everyone who came along for such a practical and valuable discussion around calf health, respiratory disease, youngstock management and long-term productivity.

It was great to see so much engagement and conversation around supporting healthier calves and stronger farm performance!

Delivered in partnership with Zoetis.
