We are recruiting for a dedicated Equine Veterinary Surgeon to join our busy ambulatory team based at our Hertfordshire Practice. The position is fixed term for 12 months to cover maternity leave, with a start date of 2nd November 2026.

This role involves working with our extensive and varied client base, which includes leisure horse owners, professional yards and stud clients.

The Hertfordshire team practise all forms of first opinion equine work, with access to fully mobile equipment and the opportunity to investigate cases fully on yard. The Practice is supported by Rossdales Laboratories, and our Equine Hospital, Diagnostic Centre and Medical Intensive Care Unit for seamless referral for diagnostic, surgical and medical procedures.

This is a full-time role working 40 hours per week Monday to Friday. The role will include contribution to the out of hours on-call service. Others hours, including Bank Holidays, may be required in accordance with the Practice needs.

** 𝐄𝐪𝐮𝐢𝐧𝐞 𝐈𝐧𝐟𝐥𝐮𝐞𝐧𝐳𝐚 (𝐄𝐈) - 𝐔𝐩𝐝𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐝 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐭𝐨𝐜𝐨𝐥𝐬 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐂𝐨𝐦𝐩𝐞𝐭𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐕𝐞𝐧𝐮𝐞𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐓𝐫𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐂𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐫𝐞𝐬 **

As a result of the increase in reported cases of equine influenza (EI) around the UK, the Equine Infectious Diseases Action Group (EIDAG) has recommended that there needs to be a period of increased vigilance and monitoring to help prevent a further spread of the disease.

To ensure the continued safe running of competitions, the various equestrian bodies across the UK are implementing new protocols for venues that operate under their rules, as are many other show and training centres that run clinics and arena hire as well as competitions. This includes passport checks on arrival and a requirement for up-to-date vaccinations. Please check the requirements of the relevant discipline governing body, or the individual venue or local organiser before attending an event or clinic.

Rossdales Veterinary Surgeons recommends that horse owners who are planning to attend shows, competitions, camps etc. this summer, as well as any informal gatherings with other people’s horses, should bring forward their horse’s annual vaccination to ensure that their horse has had a booster within the last six months. Horse owners should also monitor their horses carefully, including taking temperatures regularly.

We also strongly recommend that if you are purchasing a horse or bringing a new horse onto a yard, you ensure it is vaccinated before it is moved onto your yard and quarantined for a period before mixing with other horses.

If you have any concerns that your horse is displaying any signs of equine flu, you should not attend any gatherings and contact your vet for more advice.

We're pleased to welcome Lauren O'Leary to our ambulatory veterinary team at Rossdales Hertfordshire. Lauren will also be spending one day a week at our Diagnostic Centre, as an orthopaedic assistant to clinical director and sport horse specialist Andy Bathe.

Lauren graduated from the Royal Veterinary College (RVC) in 2020, prior to completing a rotating internship and post graduate diploma at the RVC Equine Referral Hospital. Upon completion of her internship Lauren spent time gaining valuable experience in racehorse and leisure horse work in Newmarket, Yorkshire and Australia before joining the Rossdales team earlier this month.

Lauren enjoys all aspects of ambulatory work and is looking forward to managing varied a caseload in conjunction with broadening her skill set in sports medicine.

When she's not working, Lauren enjoys running and exploring the English countryside with her dog.

A lovely success story for one our clients, Kate, whose horse Arna was initially referred into our hospital in Newmarket in April last year by our Hertfordshire vet Lisa Grahame for lameness investigation.

Following diagnosis of Proximal Suspensory Desmitis (PSD) and successful surgery with specialist vet Andy Bathe followed by a period of rehab, Arna later that year experienced a further setback, after a kick resulted in a septic hock and a further hospital admission for surgery with specialist surgeon Nicola Lynch. Happily, the surgery was successful and Arna recovered well enough to be discharged back into the care of Kate and our ambulatory vets.

After a long period of careful rehab, Kate and Arna are now back out enjoying themselves again.

The role will suit a versatile, reliable and motivated individual with outstanding attention to detail who is looking for a rewarding position within the equine veterinary industry. Please note, this is a physically demanding role that will require work outside in varied weather conditions.

The main responsibilities are to assist with the daily care and welfare of hospitalised patients, primarily responsible for bringing horses from their stable to the clinical areas. Applicants should be both confident and competent handling all types, sizes and ages of horses and ponies to assist veterinary and nursing staff while they carry out examinations and procedures. Our equine patients range from foals, youngstock and breeding stock (including mares and stallions), to racehorses, competition horses, pleasure horses and ponies. When working in theatre you will assist the theatre nurses in all aspects of theatre and equipment preparation, to ensure that high standards of patient care and cleanliness are maintained at all times.

The successful candidate will possess good general knowledge and experience in horse care and stable duties. Experience of the equine industry is essential; however full training will be provided to further expand your skills where necessary.

As the Christmas holidays approach, please don't forget to order enough medication to last your horse between Christmas and New Year.

We cannot guarantee Royal Mail postal delivery dates, so we recommend that you let us know your requirements as soon as possible, or where possible that you arrange to collect your horse’s medication from the office, to make sure you don’t run out before New Year.

The last day for standard post is Friday, 19 December, and Monday, 22 December for next day delivery. The last office collection day is Tuesday, 23 December.

Please note that no medication can be collected or dispensed on Wednesday, 24 December.
