The autumn complimentary* diagnostic testing period offered through Care About Cushings has now re-opened and is available until 31st October.

๐Ÿด Please check your horseโ€™s eligibility with your vet practice (must be a participating practice), which will then generate a voucher code for a free* diagnostic lab test (basal ACTH test). Diagnostic tests are for horses not yet diagnosed with Equine Cushing's disease. These horses are eligible for one free* diagnostic test every 12 months.

๐Ÿด For eligible horses, complimentary* dose-checker and monitoring tests are also available 4-6 weeks after starting treatment in order to ensure that horses are on the correct dose and appropriate long-term care for Cushingโ€™s patients.

๐Ÿ“ฃWeโ€™re pleased to announce that Ollie Pynn has taken over as Rossdales' Managing Clinical Director from Ian Cameron, who has done an excellent job since he took on the role in 2023.

Ollie joined Rossdales in 2003, became a partner in 2009 and a Clinical Director in 2021. As a member of our Newmarket stud team, he looks after the bloodstock of a number of our Thoroughbred stud farm clients.

Reflecting on the change, Ollie said: โ€œIan has done a great job leading the practice over the past three years, and Iโ€™m now looking forward to the challenge.โ€

Ian, who, like Ollie, is a Clinical Director and a member of our stud team in Newmarket, said: โ€œIโ€™m pleased to hand over the reins to Ollie and Iโ€™m confident the practice is in very capable hands with him as Managing Clinical Director.โ€

We were delighted to sponsor the Barren Mare Class in the Heavy Horse Show at The Herts and Essex Country Fair yesterday, represented by our vet tech Emma Chuck.

Congratulations to the beautiful Holbeache Scarlet, a Suffolk Punch mare shown by Wayne Walker and owned by Mrs L Hoskin, who was a worthy winner of the class.

Scarlet went on to be crowned Champion in the Suffolk Breed Championship and Reserve Supreme Champion of the Show โ€“ a fantastic achievement! ๐Ÿ†

Emma said: โ€œHolbeache Scarlet is a wonderful example of the Suffolk Punch breed and a worthy winner. It was a special day and my daughter Isla was also pleased to be invited into the ring to help with prizegiving.โ€

Rossdales Hertfordshire vet Grace Twitchett volunteered on behalf of the The Horse Trust to judge their Healthiest Body Condition Awards at the LC Events Summer Showing Show on 28th June.

The Horse Trust, in tandem with the BEVA - The British Equine Veterinary Association, considers equine obesity to be one of the highest ranking equine health risks today. The Horse Trustโ€™s programme celebrates horses and ponies with the best body condition in show classes and rewards exhibitors with a special โ€˜Healthiest Body Conditionโ€™ rosette.

It is estimated that around 50% of the population of horses and ponies in the UK is overweight or obese horses, possibly higher in some native ponies), and being overweight greatly increases the risk of laminitis, EMS and joint strain. As well as presenting the awards, Grace reported that great discussion was had with both judges and handlers on the day.

Grace is pictured with two winners โ€“ the first is Firle Quintessa with owner Louise Fowler, and the second is Storm with Ella-May Axon. Grace said: โ€œBoth owners have done a great job as it can be especially challenging keeping smaller ponies at a healthy weight!โ€

We are recruiting for a dedicated Equine Veterinary Surgeon to join our busy ambulatory team based at our Hertfordshire Practice. The position is fixed term for 12 months to cover maternity leave, with a start date of 2nd November 2026.

This role involves working with our extensive and varied client base, which includes leisure horse owners, professional yards and stud clients.

The Hertfordshire team practise all forms of first opinion equine work, with access to fully mobile equipment and the opportunity to investigate cases fully on yard. The Practice is supported by Rossdales Laboratories, and our Equine Hospital, Diagnostic Centre and Medical Intensive Care Unit for seamless referral for diagnostic, surgical and medical procedures.

This is a full-time role working 40 hours per week Monday to Friday. The role will include contribution to the out of hours on-call service. Others hours, including Bank Holidays, may be required in accordance with the Practice needs.

As a result of the increase in reported cases of equine influenza (EI) around the UK, the Equine Infectious Diseases Action Group (EIDAG) has recommended that there needs to be a period of increased vigilance and monitoring to help prevent a further spread of the disease.

To ensure the continued safe running of competitions, the various equestrian bodies across the UK are implementing new protocols for venues that operate under their rules, as are many other show and training centres that run clinics and arena hire as well as competitions. This includes passport checks on arrival and a requirement for up-to-date vaccinations. Please check the requirements of the relevant discipline governing body, or the individual venue or local organiser before attending an event or clinic.

Rossdales Veterinary Surgeons recommends that horse owners who are planning to attend shows, competitions, camps etc. this summer, as well as any informal gatherings with other peopleโ€™s horses, should bring forward their horseโ€™s annual vaccination to ensure that their horse has had a booster within the last six months. Horse owners should also monitor their horses carefully, including taking temperatures regularly.

We also strongly recommend that if you are purchasing a horse or bringing a new horse onto a yard, you ensure it is vaccinated before it is moved onto your yard and quarantined for a period before mixing with other horses.

If you have any concerns that your horse is displaying any signs of equine flu, you should not attend any gatherings and contact your vet for more advice.
