Gosh this heat is the absolute worst! Please people. keep your dogs in today. It wont kill them to miss a walk but it could kill them if you take them out and they overheat! Don't forget they don't have shoes and are are literally wearing a fur coat!

I have had a few people asking me how to keep their pets cool in the heat as even though we have all gone and spent a fortune on cooling mats, the darlings aren't laying on them! So here are a few ideas for you! If you need any I am selling Licky mats £3 each. I have 6 left!

✅ Cooling Ideas That Work
Frozen Treats:

Stuff a Kong and freeze it with wet food or plain yoghurt (dog-safe only).

Ice cubes with a few pieces of carrot or kibble inside.

Freeze broth (low-sodium chicken or beef) into an ice cube tray.

Blend your own frozen lickable snacks (cheaper than stocking up on dog ice cream!)
Here are some suggestions that you can mix up and add to ice cube trays for small snacks- Apple and carrot with yoghurt,
Banana and a peanut butter mashed with some water (Make sure it is Xylitol free peanut butter!)
Blueberry and strawberry with Yoghurt
Chicken Broth ice cubes (don't use things like Bisto - its salt content is too high!)

Frozen Kong /licky mat ideas
Stuff a kong with some dog meat
Cream cheese or pate
Sweet potato and chicken
Banana + dog-safe peanut butter
Plain kibble soaked in broth or water
Scrambled egg with chopped veg
Mix and match any combo and stuff into a Kong or similar toy
Freeze for at least 2 hours. Perfect long-lasting enrichment

Need something more durable?
In a spare water bowl, add some of their favourite toys and treats, fill with water and freeze for a fun game in the shade!

Dog wont play? That's ok. Just add a lot of water to their food bowl and make them go bobbing for their kibble! they may not drink it all, but they will get more water intake through their meals, even pre-soaking their kibble can help!

🌬️ What Actually Helps Dogs Stay Cool
✅ Good Cooling Methods:
Cool, Damp Towel (used properly):
Only effective if it allows evaporation.
Best placed on lightly furred areas (belly, groin, armpits).
Do not soak the towel and leave it over the whole dog—this can trap heat.
Ideal method: wet the towel, wring it out, and lay it on a cool surface for the dog to lie on, not over them like a blanket.

Fans + Damp Air:
A fan blowing over a damp dog or damp towel helps evaporate heat, especially indoors.
Combine with a cooling spray or sponge bath using lukewarm (not cold) water.

Shaded Areas:
Indoors: close curtains, use cool mats or tiled floors.
Outdoors: shaded garden areas or even a parasol and cooling crate fan.

Cooling Mats or Pads:
Some dogs avoid them at first—try wrapping in a light cover or towel to encourage use.

Cool Water Access:
Multiple bowls in different rooms.
Add an ice cube or two (for non-overheating dogs).
Offer a shallow paddling pool or damp towel to stand on.

Frozen Bottles or Cooling Toys:
Freeze a plastic bottle of water, wrap in a towel, and place in their bed.
Freeze wet rope toys or plushies for chewing.

Grooming & Coat Care:
Regular brushing removes dead fur and helps air circulate.
Never shave double-coated breeds—they need that insulation to regulate heat.

❌ What to Avoid or Use with Caution:
*Thick wet towels laid on top of dogs: can trap heat and prevent airflow*
Ice-cold water baths: too much of a shock to the system if they’re overheating
Walking during warm parts of the day: even 21–23°C can be dangerous for many breeds
Leaving dogs in parked cars or conservatories: even for “just 5 minutes”
Fan alone in a hot room: without ventilation, it just moves hot air around

🐍🐭🦎 Did you know... I’ve also owned rats, snakes AND a bearded dragon as pets? (my ex also had a tarantula but I'd rather not talk about that pet! Still makes me shiver!)

That’s right—my love for animals doesn’t stop at dogs and cats! Over the years, I’ve shared my home with all kinds of companions, including:

A group of clever, affectionate rats (the best little characters!) whom inspired me to start a Rat Agility Course business in my garden shed.

A calm and curious Royal Python (Freya) who gave amazing neck massages, and a corn Snake (Spirit) who was sold to me unknowingly pregnant and I came home from work one day to find her on a clutch of eggs, the day before I was due to go on holiday!

An occasionally confrontational bearded dragon (called Captain Howdy) who loved sunbathing on the windowsill and taking baths but would take your whole arm off for a meal worm

And various tropical fish tanks over the years and hamsters, rabbits and Guinee pigs - as well as the odd wild bird we have rescued and released.

Because of this, I’m confident and experienced when it comes to the care of:
✅ Reptiles (including lighting, heating, and humidity needs)
✅ Small pets like hamsters, guinea pigs, rabbits and rats
✅ Unusual or exotic pets with more specialist routines

I understand how important it is to maintain humidity levels, check thermostats and heat gradients, and monitor bulbs and UVB lighting—especially when you're away. It’s typical for a bulb to blow the moment you go on holiday (!) and for some reptiles, that’s more than just an inconvenience—it can impact their health.

Even if your pet doesn’t need feeding every day, a daily check-in is crucial for spotting issues like:

Equipment failure

Temperature drops

Subtle signs of illness

Or just making sure everything’s running as it should

So if you’re going away and need someone who genuinely understands the care needs of reptiles and small pets, get in touch! I offer:

🌡️ Hot Weather Update ☀️

Due to the rising temperatures over the next few days, I’ll be adjusting appointments as needed to keep all pets safe and comfortable. I’ll aim to fit in as many walks as possible before the temperature hits 23°C, and will switch to garden visits or shorter toilet breaks after that point where needed.

As always, please bear with me and trust that your dogs’ safety is my top priority. I’ll keep everyone updated, and thank you so much for your understanding. I am working on tomorrows appointments first then will notify everyone as the days progress due to any changes. 🐾💛

Meet Theo!

We have been working together for few weeks now. He is a nervous boy who needs some time to trust new people. After a few walks with his amazing owner, and bringing the best treats to the party, he seemed to have warmed to me so yesterday I met his owner at the park and walked him on my own for the first time.

To start with he was very focused on where his mum was and why wasn't she with us, but after a few minutes he settled down well and enjoyed the walk. We stopped for fuss and cuddles and lots of sniffs along the way.

So pleased and proud of him.

Field trip postponed due to the much needed downpour of rain, walks will continue shortly!

I nipped home to change as I was soaked and now there is a kitten asleep on my arms. You know the rules. I can't move until he wakes up!
