Exactly this. Next time someone scoffs at you for actively keeping your dog cool, be assured that YOU’RE the one who’s got it right.

I keep hearing, “Dogs live in hot countries — they’re fine in the heat.”
No. They’re not. Not here. Not in England. Not during a sudden heatwave.

Dogs in hot climates are acclimatised over time.
They’re walked early morning or after dark.
They grow up in heat, adjust gradually, and even then — people there take serious precautions.

Your dog?
- Lives in a cooler climate
- Is used to walks in mild temps
- Has NO time to adjust to a 30°C+ heatwave

This sudden heat is a shock to their system. They haven’t adapted. They can’t just “deal with it.”

And here’s the reality:
- Dogs overheat fast
- Heatstroke can hit in minutes
- Panting doesn’t fix everything

Don't justify walking your dog in dangerous heat with bad comparisons.
Acclimatisation matters. Your dog hasn’t had that chance.

Keep them cool, hydrated, and inside, and don’t risk their life because of a myth

You wouldn’t go running in a heatwave if you’d spent all year in 10°C weather. Why make your dog?

Disappointed to say that I’ve still seen dogs out in 30° heat this afternoon. Do better for your dog.

Heatwave & Dog Welfare – A Wake-Up Call

You learn a lot about who truly prioritizes dogs’ welfare—and who, sadly, doesn't—when extreme weather hits.

With the intense heat we’ve been experiencing, it’s been incredibly disappointing to see how many dog professionals (yes, those who should know better) have still been making dogs go out in it.

It was over 22° by 8am this morning

This isn’t just uncomfortable—it’s dangerous. Dogs can’t regulate their body temperature like we do. Heatstroke is real, and it can be fatal. No walk, daycare session, training class or silly rossette is worth risking a dog’s life.

If you're in the business of caring for dogs, then welfare has to come first. That means cancelling if necessary, and putting ego or profit aside.

To the professionals who have made changes for the sake of the dogs—thank you. You're showing what real care looks like. 🐶❤️

Let’s do better. Our dogs depend on us to make the right choices—even when it's inconvenient.

This is your periodic reminder 🐾🐾

PD Edna (in the driving seat) and her colleague PD Rodney have been enjoying the air con with this warm weather we’ve been having. However, they wanted us to remind you that hot cars are no place for dogs.

Even in fairly modest heat like this, parked cars will quickly become dangerously hot - and opening the windows makes almost no difference. Temperatures have been hotting up over the last few weeks, with yellow heat warnings being shared and talk of today possibly being the hottest day of the year so far!

If you see a dog in distress in a hot car - call 999 so our (human) officers can come and sort it. Get some more advice from our Dog Legislation Officers at the link in the comments.
