Wilf & Hugo 🖤💛

Just a couple of good boys working on their steadiness and impulse control around each other this evening.

Adolescence isn’t always easy for dogs to navigate. Their brains and bodies are changing, the world can feel more exciting (and sometimes overwhelming), and self-control is still developing.

Training isn’t about expecting them to suddenly have it all figured out. It’s about helping them navigate this stage, building the skills they need and setting them up for success in the big wide world.

You’ve got this, boys… 🐾

Humans and animals seek safety and calm.

We thrive in nature.

We find comfort in the company of others.

We need rest, play and connection.

We learn best when we feel safe.

We experience fear, stress, excitement and joy.

And perhaps it’s worth remembering that dogs aren’t different from other animals simply because they share our homes.

The needs we recognise and respect in our dogs exist in animals beyond our front doors too. 🐖🐄🐓

Different species. Many of the same needs.
All deserving of compassion. 💫

Big shout out to Wilf and his guardian. 🖤

Adolescence isn’t always easy, but these two are doing brilliantly. Working on settle, steadiness and recall - building those everyday life skills one step at a time.

1. Dogs don’t experience the world like we do👇

Their sense of smell is vastly more powerful than ours. Giving them time to sniff isn’t wasting a walk - it’s enrichment.

2. Behaviour is communication👇

Barking, pulling, freezing, jumping or moving away aren’t dogs being “difficult”. Behaviour gives us information about what they’re feeling, needing or struggling with.

3. Dogs don’t need to ‘obey’ us to have a good life 👇

Training should help dogs navigate our human world safely while still giving them choice, agency and opportunities to be dogs.
