The relationships we share with our dogs are something quite special.

The way they choose us as their safe space. How they find joy in the simplest moments, embrace the adventures we take them on and trust us to guide them through a world they don’t always understand.

There’s something so beautiful about being trusted like that. 💖

We don’t know what we don’t know.

Before becoming a dog training instructor, I used methods that, knowing what I know today, I wouldn’t choose to use again.

Not because I didn’t love my dogs or care about their welfare, but because I genuinely believed I was doing the right thing.

And I know I’m not alone in that.

I’m passionate about ethical dog training and advocating for better animal welfare, but I also believe there’s a difference between challenging outdated methods and judging the people using them.

We’re all learning, and sometimes the most powerful thing we can offer someone is education, encouragement and understanding rather than judgement.

We can stand firmly by our values while still showing compassion to those who are finding their way.

KAHU Group Training Sessions | Hassocks 🐶

Just one space remaining on our final group training course of 2026!

Our small, friendly group sessions are designed to help you and your dog build practical skills for everyday life.

Throughout the four-week course, we work on:

🐶 Recall
🐶 Loose lead walking
🐶 Settling calmly
🐶 Leave it, drop & stay
🐶 Impulse control
🐶 Engagement around distractions
🐶 Building confidence & neutrality around other dogs

Our sessions are open to dogs of all ages, but are particularly suited to puppies, adolescents and dogs who would benefit from building strong foundations or brushing up on the basics.

Our final 4-week course of the year:

📅 24 November – 15 December
📍 Hassocks, West Sussex
⏰ Tuesdays, 6–7pm

I notice more than just the dogs learning.

I notice the people who turn up after a long day at work, when life is busy and there are a hundred other things they could be doing.

I notice the people who choose to invest their time in understanding their dogs better. Who want to learn, grow and become better guardians for the animals who depend on them.

I notice the patience, the kindness, the little moments of connection and the willingness to see the world from their dog’s perspective.

Because choosing to attend a training class isn’t just about teaching your dog new skills. It’s about recognising that they have needs, feelings and experiences of their own, and making the time to understand them.

And that matters.

Our dogs don’t get to choose the lives we give them, but we get to choose how much effort we put into making those lives the best they can be.

So, to every guardian who shows up, who keeps learning, who puts their dog’s wellbeing first, even when life gets busy…

I notice. And I think it’s a really beautiful thing.

Why didn’t Honey join us on the group walk today?

Because not every experience is right for every dog, and that’s absolutely fine!

As a Beagle cross, Honey is incredibly scent-driven. She loves following her nose, exploring her surroundings and doing things at her own pace.

Group walks can be challenging for scent hounds, particularly when there’s an expectation to move along at the same pace as everyone else.

Honey is generally comfortable around other dogs, but she doesn’t particularly seek out their company or enjoy them invading her personal space. She prefers calm, predictable interactions where she has the freedom to choose whether to engage.

Friendship looks a little different to Honey, and that’s absolutely okay!

Every dog is an individual, with their own preferences, needs and boundaries. Just because an experience is enjoyable for one dog doesn’t mean it will be for another.

Part of being a good guardian is recognising those differences, respecting our dogs’ preferences and making choices based on what’s right for them, rather than what we think they should enjoy.

So today, Honey’s having a rest day instead. And she’s absolutely fine with that! 😴💛💫

When no one turns up to the group walk because of the storm… Sonny and Bali turn it into a little date instead! 💘

These two had a lovely couple of hours together this morning, walking, exploring, sniffing and even catching a few zzz’s back at The Thatched Inn, Hassocks. 😴

Making friends is important for dogs too. Positive social experiences can help build confidence, develop communication skills and help dogs learn how to feel comfortable and relaxed around each other.

And sometimes, it’s simply about enjoying each other’s company. 💖

A pretty perfect morning for these two! 🥰
