It's a Whitaker win in the Derby!

"I’ve tried to win this class a few times, but never really had the right horse," says Robert Whitaker, who found himself on the right partner today for a fortuitous win in the 63rd Al Shira'aa Hickstead Derby.

That partner? A new ride in nineteen-year-old Gentlemen Van Het Veldof, who was sixth here last year with Joseph Clayton aboard and fifteenth the year before with Tim Gredley.

"In the back of my mind I always thought he could win this class. So it was always the plan for him this year," says Robert, who now adds a first Derby title to his wins in the Nations Cup and the King George V Gold Cup at in Hickstead's International Arena.

“It’s an amazing achievement – I’m particularly thrilled for the horse. I feel like he deserves it," says Rebecca Court, who won the Tattersalls RoR Open Ridden Show Series Championship with the excellent Festive Fare, who she rides for Diana Taylor.

"I’ve had a number of really good RORs, and I rate him as one of the best. He’s a proper lightweight hunter, which for me is the most important thing – that as a show horse, he’s got a type and a class, and he holds his own in those lightweights. He’s got a terrific brain, terrific limbs, a terrific length of rein, and he’s just phenomenal to sit on. He just goes up the gears."

Just two days ago, sixteen-year-old Mabkhout Alkarbi began his first trip to England – and, indeed, his first-ever round on grass – in fine style, taking the win in the Al Shira’aa Hickstead Derby Meeting’s Fly Free Equine 1.25m Open Championship.

Now, on the prestigious show’s final day, he closes out his British debut with victory in the Doney Championship, which unfolded in the international arena over two rounds and featured an assortment of winners from across the week’s classes.

His victory, with the classy Harry 233, isn’t just a harbinger of his own successes to come – though those will surely be plentiful, if his prowess as a teenager against riders twice or thrice his age is anything to go by. It’s also a poignant sharing of honours for Hickstead’s title sponsors Al Shira’aa, for whom UAE competitor Mabkhout also rides.

“This feels very good – a big thank you to Al Shira’aa,” beams Mabkhout – whose name, incidentally, translates to “lucky one” or, in some translations, “champion.”

Join us in the International Arena at 2.10pm for a special retirement ceremony for the 2022 Al Shira'aa Derby champion, Can Ya Makan.

Together, Shane Breen and Can Ya Makan produced a perfect clear round to win the Derby outright - it was a masterful display of riding.

Now 19, Can Ya Makan is bowing out after a stellar career.

He's done just two coloured classes, and he's been Champion twice – so it's safe to say that the future is very bright for Lynn Russell's five-year-old Guardian Of The Galaxy, who took the win in the Agria Coloured Horse Ridden Championship this morning.

"He's got the most amazing temperament, and to be honest, when you've produced as many horses as I have, it's a godsend," says the hugely experienced Lynn with a smile.
