In 1998, John Whitaker won the prestigious Hickstead Derby riding Gammon, a 21-year-old German-bred gelding.

This victory made Gammon the oldest horse ever to win the event. They secured the win after a thrilling jump-off against Irish rider Captain John Ledingham on Kilbaha.
