ANNOUNCEMENT: Hurst College National Schools Championships - Important Competitor Information

In light of the current UK temperature warning and in the interests of horse welfare, we have made some temporary changes to the opening hours of the Stable Field on Thursday 25th June.

The Stable Field arrival windows are during the following times:

• 08:00 – 11:00
• 11:00 – 17:00 CLOSED, do not arrive during this period
• 17:00 – 22:00

All competitors have been emailed.

A decade of determination, rewarded 🏆

Ten years after William Whitaker last lifted the legendary Boomerang Trophy with Glenavadra Brilliant, he has written his name onto the Al Shira’aa Derby roll of honour once again.

After a clear last year, followed by one down in the jump off, earned them second place, William and the incredible Flamboyant III returned to Hickstead and went one better.

Two combinations managed to clear the historic track, forcing a head-to-head against 2023 champions David Simpson and Pjotr Van De Kruishoeve. William delivered under intense pressure, jumping the only clear round.

"He’s come so close the last few years. The horse deserved to win, from the round he’d jumped already," said William.

While conquering the Hickstead bank is hard enough, Will’s biggest worry now is surviving the afterparty with the trophy intact!

“Last time I won the Derby we had a big party. When I woke up in the morning at Daisy Bunn’s house, I walked into the kitchen where the trophy was on the table. I looked, and I looked again... and I realised, ‘One of the ears has been knocked off!’ So I immediately went to Daisy and said, ‘Who’s going to tell (Hickstead Director) Lizzie?’”

“She took it very well, but when she came over with the trophy today, I said ‘Make sure you put a helmet on it this year!’”

William Whitaker claims the 2026 Al Shira'aa Derby.

Piloting Flamboyant III to a foot perfect performance, the pair jumped a double clear to clinch victory in a Britain versus Ireland jump off with David Simpson and Pjotr Van De Kruishoeve.

After 10 years since his initial victory back in 2016, William becomes the 11th Whitaker to etch his name on the Boomerang Trophy.

Congratulations to Will, his team, Elliott and Vicky Smith and all connections.

A royal repeat at Hickstead!

Katie Jerram has written another incredible chapter in showing history. Today, she claimed the Tattersalls RoR Open Ridden Show Series Championship once again—this time riding The King’s “phenomenal” gelding, First Receiver.

“I have won that twice, I won for the first time on Barbers Shop for Her majesty the Queen, bred by the late Queen Mother, which was very, very special,” Katie said, “And then today I won on First Receiver, bred by the Queen and this time owned by the King.

“He was reserve champion last year and he went that one bit better this year, which was my dream.”

The nine-year-old, known as “Firsty,” now ranks as the best retrainer Katie has ever produced, having captured all but one title on the circuit — the supreme at Aintree.

It was a first win in the International Arena for both rider Iwan Carpenter and owner Mike Smith.

Mike’s gifted seven-year-old mare Ramiro Dollar clocked a comfortable 2sec lead to take the Doney Championship.

Next stop: The Agria Royal International, where they’ve qualified for the SEIB winter novice.
“I thought it would be a nice class for her to go in and see the big area. Obviously she coped with it perfectly!” said Iwan.

“I’ve never had a winner in that ring before. My wife called me to ask if I was crying yet!” added Mike, who bough the mare as a five-month-old foal.

Back-to-back champions!

Lynn Russell and her lovely Irish cob Guardian Of The Galaxy have retained their title in The Agria Coloured Horse Ridden Championship.

Despite still being a novice, this rising six-year-old is on an absolute winning streak, with recent victories at Bath and West, Herts County, and South of England.

"I bought him unbroken and broke him virtually on my own. He’s got an amazing temperament, is a lovely horse to work with and he’s a fab ride,” she said.
