Rant of the day The Goldfish Bowl: A Century of Bad Advice
Back in 1917, William T. Innes author of Goldfish Varieties and Tropical Aquarium Fishes was already warning against the use of goldfish bowls. He described the small globe as “an abomination”… and that was over a century ago.

Fast forward to today: I was out with the kids and popped into another fish shop, only to see goldfish bowls still being sold without a filter to unsuspecting customers. A hundred years of knowledge, and we’re still repeating the same mistakes.

At Friendly Fish Aquatics, that would never happen. We always explain the needs of goldfish clearly: they need space, filtration, and proper care not a tiny bowl that slowly poisons them.

Let’s do better for our fish. They deserve it.

Massive congrats to Dan, our July winner of Show Us Your Tank!

Dan’s turned heads with his brilliant 120L tropical tank, built right into a custom TV feature wall! Not only does it look amazing, but it’s been properly thought through – side access, wheels for cleaning, and all the essentials taken care of.

Here’s what Dan had to say:

So I had the crazy idea of building my own TV feature wall with the tropical fish tank within… testing water and feeding there’s side access and pull out as on wheels to clean etc… we really enjoy watching the fish in the morning with a cuppa! What we think:
This tank is off to a great start we love the open layout that gives the fish space to swim, plus the hiding spots tucked among the plants. Can’t wait to see how it looks in six months once the plants really fill out!

“Hi everyone, I have here my planted tropical fish tank.

It’s got some lovely plants, fish, and substrate and it really stands out in my front room. My 1-year-old and 6-year-old kids spend just as much time as I do sitting in front of it, watching the fish swim around.

Massive thanks to Barry and his wife for all the great advice and help that’s helped me end up with a tank like this that I can appreciate all year round 😁”
