⭐️ THE HYBRID HANDSTRIP ⭐️

Handstripping: some dogs don’t mind it, some dogs don’t… and the same can probably be said for groomers too! 😆

I have a couple of clients whose dogs I still fully handstrip, but over the last year or so I’ve increasingly moved towards the hybrid handstrip method shown in the photo.

Full handstripping can be hard work on the dog and pretty tough on my hands as well! The hybrid method has become my grooming style for many wire-haired breeds, and my clients are really happy with the finish, and how the coat looks and grows out between grooms.

When I first set out to be a dog groomer, I thought it was simply a case of brush, wash, dry, clip, scissor and send dogs home looking their best.

However, with many of the dogs that come through my salon door, that couldn't be further from the truth. Over the years, I have been faced with complex anxieties in dogs of all breeds that struggle with handling, touch, noise and many of the things we consider normal during the grooming process.

That is why it is so important to "train" puppies from the very beginning to be groomed. Start with the basics and, in a year's time or so, you'll have a dog that happily accepts the grooming process.

Rescue dogs, however, are a whole different story. I have had some very nervous cases that have taken years to learn to trust me. This week, I had a lovely rescue dog who is terrified of water and metal. So, it's back to basics in getting her comfortable being in the bath. Treats and praise, using watering cans instead of shower attachments, are just the start. Keeping noise to a minimum and everything calm makes headway.

So yes, rescue dogs equal patience. But I know that, in time it always pays off. 🙏🐾

Good morning! It looks like we're in for another hot day... 🥵

I know it seems a long way off, but before we know it, autumn and winter will be here, and that means muddy and rainy walks! 🍂🐾

To make life a little easier, I'm thinking of launching a Countryside Walk & Groom Package. Your dog will enjoy up to an hour's countryside walk before returning to the salon for their groom, so they'll come home happy, exercised and looking their best.

If this is a service you'd be interested in, please let me know. As I'll need to allow extra time in my diary, I'm gauging interest now before I launch it. The additional cost will vary depending on your dog's breed, size and age and will be added to the standard grooming price. For your peace of mind, I will be fully insured.

For the first time ever, I'm actually relieved to be heading somewhere cooler! 🇫🇮 Finland is currently a balmy 22°C, which sounds far more bearable than the temperatures we've been having here, especially as I won't be working in it!

I am closed for the next week as I'm heading off to spend some time with my family. I'll be back on Tuesday 14th July, and will respond to all messages when I return.

And here's a fun fact about the Finnish Spitz, Finland's national dog breed. Did you know they can bark an incredible 160 times per minute? 😵‍💫 Now that is worse than my three Jacks and that takes some beating! 😂

Can I just say a HUGE thank you to all of you who visited this week with your dogs and accommodated earlier starts or I moved your appointments around.

Thank you for the cold drinks and cold sprays too that I was given this week. I felt very appreciated. With the lack of sleep due to furnace temperatures, a whirlwind slamming doors on Thursday night and a noisy storm last night that didn’t want to leave, I’d be glad to have just some “normal” summer weather please! 🙏

Good morning! ☀️

It’s going to be as hot as a hot dog 🌭 this week, which is a delight to work in… 🥵

If I haven’t already been in touch, I’ll be contacting you today about finishing by 2pm during the hot weather. This may mean an earlier start time or a slight change to your appointment if you’re visiting this week.

My grooming room stays pretty cool in the mornings, but even with an air con fan, dryers and clippers create extra heat on top of the forecast volcanic temperatures… 🌋

Both your dog and I would really appreciate a slightly more “siesta-style” approach to the working day this week!
