Lungworm is a potentially fatal disease affecting dogs & evidence has shown it has become much more widespread across the UK over the last 25 years. It is now considered endemic throughout much of the UK, & in the Midlands lungworm is regarded as an established risk.
Foxes also play a role in spreading the parasite into local environments used by dogs.

Lungworm is carried by slugs/snails & dogs can become infected by accidentally eating slugs/snails or coming into contact with contaminated slime trails.
Dogs that eat grass, chew toys, use bowls left outside, drink from puddles or have a tendency to investigate outdoor debris may be at higher risk.

The severity of the disease can vary, Some dogs may not show symptoms during the early stages of infection, however, possible signs can include - coughing, difficulty breathing, vomiting, diarrhoea, nosebleeds, anaemia, lethargy, weight loss & seizures.

Preventive treatment is commonly recommended year round, as transmission is now considered ongoing. Treatment is easy to administer & products are available from your veterinary practice.

Also blood tests & stool samples can be used to detect whether your dog is infected.

Sensible precautions, such as not leaving food or water bowls, toys, chews outside are also recommended.
