I just wanted to take a moment to give a huge shoutout to all the dog walkers, trainers, boarders, groomers, pet sitters and every other dog-related professional out there.
Before opening the field, I honestly thought dog walkers simply picked dogs up, had a fun walk, and dropped them back home again - how wrong was I?! The amount of work that goes on behind the scenes every single day is incredible. And when a heatwave like this hits, that work goes completely off the charts.
I’m lucky enough to be part of a fantastic network of professionals and all over the bank holiday weekend we’ve been constantly in touch - sharing ideas, asking for advice, planning ahead, changing schedules and doing everything possible to keep dogs safe and comfortable.
I closed the field and rearranged the bookings, but the amount of time and effort the other dog professionals have put into completely reorganising their weeks has been on another level. Changing routes and times to avoid the heat, finding shaded areas and water stops, using cooling mats, cooling jackets and collars, setting up fans and air conditioning in the grooming rooms, creating cooling enrichment activities, offering drop-ins instead of walks… the list genuinely goes on.
The heatwaves also have a huge financial impact on dog professionals. Cancelled walks, reduced bookings, shorter sessions, extra equipment, higher running costs and time spent reorganising schedules all add up. Many are losing income while still doing absolutely everything they can to prioritise the safety and wellbeing of the pooches in their care.
These professionals put so much effort into making sure the dogs are happy, healthy and safe. There have literally been hundreds of messages in our group this weekend, all focused on doing the very best for the dogs.
So if your pooch gets picked up by a dog walker this week, dropped off at the groomers, stays with a boarder while you’re away, or has a pet sitter looking after them at home - please give those professionals an extra thank you. They truly do go above and beyond. 💜
