🐾 Important update for UK pet owners 🐾
Some new veterinary regulations are expected to come into place in 2026, following the CMA’s investigation into pricing and transparency within the industry.

For many of us, vet bills can be one of the biggest worries when it comes to caring for our dogs — especially when costs aren’t always clear from the start. These changes are meant to give owners more clarity, more control, and hopefully a bit of peace of mind.
Here’s what’s expected to change:
🐾 Capped prescription fees
Written prescriptions will be limited to:
£21 for the first item
£12.50 for each additional item on the same prescription
🐾 More choice when buying medication
Vets will need to let owners know that medications can often be sourced more affordably online
🐾 Greater transparency on pricing
Practices will have to clearly display costs for common treatments, helping avoid unexpected bills
🐾 Upfront estimates for larger costs
If treatment is likely to exceed £500, you should be given a written estimate beforehand
🐾 Clarity around ownership
Practices must make it clear whether they are independently run or part of a larger corporate group
🐾 Clearer prescription information
Prescriptions will follow a more consistent and easy-to-understand format

For those of us with rescue dogs, older dogs, or pets with ongoing health issues, this could genuinely make a difference 💛

At 1 Dog at a Time Rescue UK, we see every day how quickly costs can rise — and how difficult it can be when you’re trying to do the very best for a dog who depends on you.

We’ve had dogs come into our care needing ongoing medication where every pound matters — choosing between the best treatment and what’s affordable should never be a position any owner is put in.

Anything that brings more honesty, more choice, and fairer pricing into veterinary care is something we can only welcome 🐶💛
