Behind the scenes: Compassion in every step

We know that, for many families, one of the biggest comforts is understanding how their pet will be cared for.

At Cherished Companion, every step is handled with gentleness, dignity and respect.

From the moment a pet comes into our care, they are looked after in a calm, personal, family-run setting — not an industrial environment. Whether collected from home or from a vet practice, every pet is treated with compassion and respect from the very beginning.

One of the things that brings many families reassurance is knowing that the same person who collects their pet also carries out the individual cremation and helps return them home.

Each pet is placed carefully into a basket and remains there throughout their time in our care until cremation. This is one of the ways we make sure every companion is cared for individually and treated with dignity at every step.

We believe aftercare should never feel rushed. From individual cremation to ashes being returned home, every part of the journey is handled with compassion, kindness and attention to detail.

Many families don’t realise they can ask for individual cremation

When a pet passes away, families are often having to make decisions in the middle of heartbreak, shock and exhaustion.

In those moments, many people simply go with the option put in front of them — without realising they can ask questions, explore alternatives, and choose what feels right for their pet.

One of those choices is individual cremation.

We gently encourage families to ask:
🐾 What type of cremation is being arranged — individual or communal?
🐾 What crematorium is being used — commercial or independent?

Understanding your options, and knowing that you do have choices, can help you make the decision that feels right for your pet and your family.

From vet practice to our care… what happens next?

When a pet has been gently put to sleep at the vet practice, many families are left wondering what happens afterwards.

At Cherished Companion, we can often be there to collect your pet straight away and bring them directly into our care.

From that moment on, your pet is treated with dignity, kindness and respect at every step.

They are carefully placed into their own basket, where they remain until their individual cremation takes place. They are then brought back to our home here in Glossop, where they stay with us for the full duration of their care.

We also talk families through the different ways their pet’s ashes can come home, including urns, scatter tubes, and keepsakes such as paw prints, memorial frames, jewellery and fur clippings.

One of the things that matters most to many families is knowing that the same person who collects their pet also carries out the individual cremation, so their companion is privately and personally cared for from start to finish.

Because every pet deserves a cherished farewell.

We are absolutely thrilled to share some wonderful news…

Cherished Companion has been named Central England Pet Crematorium of the Year 2025/26 by the Prestige Awards.

A little while ago, we were contacted to say that Cherished Companion had been nominated for this award. From there, a panel of judges reviewed our business in detail, including our website, social media, services, pricing, customer offering, and the way we support families during one of the most difficult times.

To now be told that we have won is incredibly special.

This is our second award in just over 12 months, and for a small, independent, family-run business that only opened in November 2024, it means such a lot.
When we started Cherished Companion, our aim was simple: to offer families a more personal, gentle and transparent choice when saying goodbye to a much-loved pet. Every pet who comes into our care is treated with dignity, kindness and respect, and every family is supported as we would want to be supported ourselves.

Awards like this are lovely recognition, but the real honour is being trusted by so many families to care for their pets at such an important time.

Thank you to every family who has chosen us, recommended us, left a review, shared our posts, or simply helped spread the word. Your support means more than we can ever say.

We are so proud, so grateful, and more determined than ever to continue offering the level of care every pet deserves.
