Week 3 of our meet the breed segment and this week we have Pamela and her Belgium Malinois x German Shepherd Sadie .

The following is in Pamela’s own words

Living with a GSD, Belgian Mallinois cross is equal measure joy and exhaustion. From the moment she wakes up, Sadie is full of purpose - ready to run on the beach, chasing her ball and herding her humans so they are all together and in her line of sight. She then rests for what feels like 5 minutes before she is alert again, ready to let me know when a car door opens, a mile away. She takes all her toys and distributes them all over the house. Then it’s time for her next walk - in the woods, where she obsesses over pine cones. After dinner, she stares the death stare, until you do some training, play with the flirt pole and conduct ‘find it’ with treats hidden in the garden. At night she snoozes at my feet, ready to warn me of a leaf moving in the garden. Ever watchful and always waiting for the next adventure.

The “ My dog would never do that moment “

Below is a photo of our trainer Vicky’s dog Daken , Daken was bred by Vicky so as you can imagine has been a regular visitor at the centre for the last 5 years.

He’s extremely well trained, very balanced and very neutral as most of you will know , no doubt most of you would have seen or met him at some point .

Daken has never paid any attention to the horses next door until yesterday, if you look at Daken’s posture here you’ll see he’s fully prey locked and stalking the horse.

Given the opportunity here he would have without a doubt charged that horse , spooking it and given chase .

Luckily firstly he’s on lead due to an injury and secondly his behaviour was noticed quickly , corrected and brought back into heel before anything untoward could happen.

Moral of the story !!!!

No matter how well trained your dog is , no matter how many times they have been neutral around any livestock or wildlife they are unpredictable and are predators.

Your dog should be on lead at all times around livestock and wildlife when you’re out with them otherwise the “ they have never done that before “ moment can very sadly cost them their lives

Week 2 of our meet the breed segment.

This week it’s the Cocker Spaniel.

Below are Gemma and Ellie , the following is in Gemma’s own words

Owning my Cocker Spaniel has been one of the most rewarding experiences. She’s a black female, a working x show type, and she has a brilliant mix of energy, intelligence, and affection.

From early on, I focused on giving her structure. She’s crate trained and genuinely loves her crate—it’s her safe space, especially with a blanket over the top. I also introduced her to doggy day care early, which has been fantastic for her socialisation. She now mixes confidently with a wide range of breeds, and it’s really helped shape her into a well-rounded dog.

She’s also a breed that really needs to be understood in terms of mental stimulation. Keeping her mind engaged through training, play, and enrichment is just as important as physical exercise, and it makes a huge difference to her behaviour and overall happiness.

In terms of personality, she’s incredibly loving and loyal, but definitely on her own terms—which I think is part of her charm. She’s full of character, very driven, and completely obsessed with her ball, as well as birds and squirrels. Her nose is almost always to the ground, which really shows her spaniel instincts.

Routine has been important for her, and she settles well—she sleeps through the night and knows what to expect day to day. She can be a bit stubborn at times, so I’ve learned the importance of being consistent and firm with her training.

Overall, she has a fantastic personality and brings so much joy to our lives. We absolutely adore her x
