🚨🐶 THIS HEATWAVE, HEAT STROKE CAN BE FATAL – HERE ARE A FEW THINGS TO LOOK OUT FOR 🐶🚨
With temperatures reaching the high 30s this week, our dogs are at much greater risk of heat stroke. Unfortunately, heat stroke can become life-threatening very quickly, so recognising the warning signs early is crucial.
⚠️ Signs of Heat Stroke ⚠️
❗ Excessive panting
❗ Thick, sticky drool
❗ Bright red gums or tongue
❗ Rapid heart rate
❗ Lethargy or weakness
❗ Vomiting or diarrhoea
❗ Staggering or loss of coordination
❗ Collapse
❗ Seizures
If your dog is showing any of these signs, act immediately.
✅ What To Do
• Move your dog to a cool, shaded area
• Offer small amounts of cool (not ice-cold) water
• Pour cool water over their body, especially their belly, paws and inner thighs
• Use a fan if available
• Contact your vet immediately
❌ Do NOT
• Use ice baths or ice-cold water
• Force your dog to drink
• Wait to see if they improve on their own
🐾 Prevention Tips
✔ Walk early morning or late evening
✔ Ensure constant access to fresh water
✔ Provide plenty of shade
✔ Use cooling mats and cooling products
✔ Avoid strenuous exercise during the hottest parts of the day
✔ Never leave a dog in a parked vehicle – not even for a few minutes
