Meet little Shackleton! He came to me as he was unwell as a young puppy and missed out on a lot. I don’t do any form of hall training but this dog has a very busy lifestyle and needs to get used to environments like this. So, I have been taking Shackleton to class on his owners behalf with his Newfie friend Dante and he’s doing so well 🥰 He has also met Buddy who is always delighted when I let him meet the puppies, I think it’s his favourite part of his job 😆 Shackleton is doing so well, a very special little dog. I can see why he’s named after an explorer! 🐾

What a fantastic weekend! I love my job 🥰

🐾 Sat- My first adventure day with Walkies. Had the best time with Louise and the dogs! ❤️

🐾 Sun- A very rewarding session with Manus the Great Dane working on his lead reactivity. He’s the sweetest giant boy!

Followed by another productive group class at Roseisle. No pictures from training as my full focus was required 👀

Finally I collected my board & train dog, Miller the Poodle cross, who is here working on his excessive barking and social skills 😊

I had the pleasure of having Peli come to stay for a night 😊 This handsome man is 12yo and I’ve known him since he was just 1yo- longer than my Buddy has been alive! ❤️ He is a very special dog to me. The last two photos are him making himself at home in my parents house when we visited😆 He even got to come to work with me today to help little Guinness on his confidence around other dogs 🥰

To most these videos won’t seem like much, but for my customer and her dog this was huge. Today’s session was working on Millies reactivity and confidence around other dogs (springer in the first pics with Buddy). After a couple of sessions with my Buddy, we introduced Angela’s two spaniels (second springer and black cocker). What a confidence boost for Millie, huge thank you to Angela and her girls! You would never know that Summer was previously reactive when they first started working with me! Proud moment as their trainer 🥰

Just a reminder that I will be working through the majority of the festive period bar a couple of days. Christmas group training dates will be released soon 🎅

Today’s group class, Daisy and her owner Nicky showing us how it’s done. This exercise is used to practice keeping your dog’s focus while passing other dogs. What a brilliant class where my lovely owners showed off their handling skills 😎

🐾 Muzzles 🐾

There are so many reasons why a dog could be wearing a muzzle. Here are a few reasons why dogs that I know wear one:

🐾 Serial poo eater
🐾 Random stone eating habit
🐾 They have had multiple foreign body operations and would need to be euthanised if they needed another
🐾 They are a rescue with a history of being unpredictable so the owner takes no risks in public
🐾 They have harmed another dog and the owner will not risk that happening again
🐾 They are reactive and it is a safety precaution while working with the dog in public
🐾 It is the responsible thing to do while they are working through a behavioural issue related to other dogs

‼️If you see a dog wearing a muzzle- stop and think before approaching.

❓ Is the dog wearing the muzzle also on a lead?

❓Is the person handling the dog positioned away from everyone and creating space for the dog?

❌If the answer is yes to either, for safety’s sake, please assume that space is required.

***This actually applies even if the dog does not have a muzzle on. ***

✅ If the dog appears to be going about its life normally and the handler is not actively making space/ moving away then simply ask before approaching.

While assessing dogs today, we were approached by a child. This little girl had the common sense to ask from a distance if the dogs could be petted. I politely explained that I was their trainer and I don’t allow them to be fussed while they’re training. But I took the time to tell her a little about the dogs and how good it was that she stopped at a distance and asked.

During the same 5 minute period, we also had an adult let their dog unexpectedly rush up to us at the end of a flexi lead. Despite one dog wearing a muzzle and me having positioned myself away from people. Thankfully the dog I had recovered very quickly and settled back down. Sadly these things do happen and are sometimes unavoidable- hence the muzzle.

If a young child can have the sense to ask before approaching, adults can too.

Sula 🐾

Sula the Cocker Spaniel and Buddy during our training session- quick stop at the stream to take the pressure off. Sula has come a long way from where we started, this was a tester session to see if she’d go back to her old habits when one to one with another dog. She used to bark, chase and sometimes nip but she showed great impulse control and lovely manners today 🥰 Ongoing group classes to continue building her confidence and manners with all sorts of dogs is the plan! 🐶

🐾 Guinness and Lola 🐾

An update on my two chihuahua crosses, Guinness is still making amazing progress! Here he is calm and relaxed around my Buddy 🥰 He had a small setback where he was “seeing red” and reacting a lot faster so we went back to basics with a familiar dog. Training isn’t always perfect, sometimes a step back is required so as not to lose the progress you’ve made. I only ever train at a pace that suits the dog I’m working with. 🐾
