Well done to all of the winners of the dog show at the summer fete on Saturday! It was a great event run by Friends of Old Town Rec, with the dog show sponsored by Cobie VetCare. It was so lovely to see so many beautiful dogs with their proud owners! We are very proud to be so integrated with the local community, with our own Head Nurse Lou being involved with the event! 🐾

Jimmy the Jack Russell came in to the practice with a bloated abdomen and laboured breathing. Vet Casey found a pericardial effusion on ultrasound - this is a life-threatening build up of fluid around the heart, which had caused right sided heart failure meaning the space between the lungs and his abdomen had also filled with fluid! Vet Giacomo performed an emergency pericardiocentesis (needle into the area surrounding the heart) and drained 73ml of fluid!

Jimmy went to a referral centre to see the cardiology and internal medicine specialists as the most common cause of pericardial effusion is a heart based tumour. This wasn’t found in Jimmy, and he got signed off today when Casey repeated the ultrasound of his chest! Although not entirely out of the woods, his progress has been amazing and he will continue to be monitored by the team and his dedicated owner! 🐾

All vets are required to complete a certain number of hours of training named continued professional development (CPD) outside of work each year to remain registered with the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons
(RCVS). Our vets have recently been undertaking monthly ultrasound CPD sessions with board certified specialist Andrew Denning, to further develop in this aspect of diagnostic imaging Ultrasound is essential in identifying life threatening diseases or complications, diagnosing chronic and acute conditions, and monitoring progress after treatment! Staff dog Rudy made it all possible, while being the most well behaved patient in the world, even falling asleep while the team practiced their scanning skills!
