Here at Salvators, only the best is good enough. So when it came to selecting a shampoo brand to use in my salon, the choice was obviously

I've been grooming a long time and have tried and tested many different brands, but I've been using the motherfluffer detangling shampoo and miracle coat additive on my Poodle for the last year or so.

The shampoos smell amazing, clean the coat with ease, and make her coat is so manageable. I would never use anything else on her, so why shouldn't my clients get the same 5 star treatment?

I’ve been grooming for over 10 years now, and the way I work with dogs has evolved so much in that time.

When I first started out, I was told (like many of us were!) that handstrip dogs shouldn’t be bathed. “You can’t bath them before,” they said, “and definitely not after.” It was one of those rules you just accepted and passed on to clients.

But experience is a wonderful teacher.

These days, it is true that you shouldn't bathe handstrip dogs after, but I do bathe them before. In fact, the dog I competed with, and won awards for, was bathed before I stripped him.

Grooming isn’t about rigid rules. It’s about understanding the why behind the techniques, and adapting them to each individual dog. That’s what I love most about this work. No two dogs are the same, and there’s always more to learn.

Something I wish more people knew is how important handling and behaviour is for dogs.

Teaching recognised qualifications to new dog groomers for the past 6 years, I have said the same thing time and time again: "You think the haircut is the hard part, but it's not. It's the handling."

Understanding how a dog feels, comfortably manoeuvring their body, listening to their communication, reading their body language and reacting appropriately is a skill.

Too often during the grooming process dogs are labelled 'difficult', 'mean', or 'naughty' when they are in fact none of these things. Normally, they are instead worried, misunderstood or in pain.

Finding a groomer who understands what your dog is communicating and can react in a way to make the grooming process more comfortable is important. Some dogs may never learn to love the process, but having a groomer who works with your dog will make the world of difference.
