The dry spell's over, and the rain's properly back this week.

There's a difference between a coat that keeps the top half dry and one that covers the whole dog, and it's a big part of why Rukka's Protect Overall is one of our most popular jackets for the autumn and winter months. It runs the full length of each leg, so muddy verges and wet grass don't end up all over your dog's belly and legs on the way home.

Four way stretch keeps it comfortable enough for a proper walk, not just a dash to the postbox, with a lead opening built in so it still works over a harness. A zip runs the length of the back for a quick on and off, and it's the taped seams underneath doing the real work of keeping the wet out. Velcro at each leg gets you a snug fit at the cuffs, and it's machine washable when it inevitably needs it. Works just as well on a short coat as a thick one.

There's nothing worse than watching a dog wriggle halfway out of a harness on a walk. It happens more than you'd think, and it's almost always down to fit.

We check harnesses for free in the shop, no appointment needed. Ten minutes, and we'll go over the whole thing properly so nothing rubs and nothing gives if your dog gets a fright.

Sizing charts only get you so far. A proper check on the actual dog catches what a tape measure can't.

So if your puppy's grown since spring, you ordered a harness from us online, or it's just never quite sat right, bring your dog in and we'll have a look.

You've probably noticed it already: the evenings are creeping in a little more each week now.

If your normal walk is turning into a dusk walk without you really meaning it to, it's worth a quick think about being seen. Ruffwear's Front Range Harness has reflective trim built right round it, and there's a light loop on the back sized for their Beacon safety light. Clip it on and your dog's visible well before a car's headlights find them, which the reflective trim alone won't manage on its own.

If you've got Monday off, chances are you're already planning one last proper outing with the dog before autumn sets in.

Worth a quick check while you've still got a couple of evenings spare: something to carry water, a lead that suits wherever you're headed, and a coat if the forecast's looking changeable. It usually is.

Nothing worse than finding the important bit's still sitting in a drawer once you're halfway up a hill. Shop the range and order in time for the long weekend if there's a gap in the kit bag.

Today is International Dog Day, and Harris found out early. He posed for a photo outside the shop this morning, looking thoroughly pleased with himself, which is generally how he looks most mornings anyway.

Every dog earns a bit of that today, not just the ones on the payroll. Yours might be the one who treats a walk like a red carpet moment, or the one still holding a grudge about last week's bath.
