The on lead group dog meet is back this Sunday with Dog Owners of Toftwood & surrounding areas 🐾

Sunday 31st May meeting at 10:30am on the main field at the Neatherd (Dereham NR20 4AG).

This is a free group walk open to all dogs and owners. It's a great opportunity to work with your dog amongst other under control and on lead dogs. It's also a nice opportunity to chat to other like minded owners and has become a lovely little community.

All dogs must stay on lead and be aware that some dogs in the group might not be dog/ stranger friendly so keep appropriate space and advocate for your dog.

A bit of silliness as the weather was cooler today! Have you ever tried just legging it to see if your dogs are paying any attention to you? 😂 I can't lie, I do this fairly frequently if my dogs are off lead and I think they are too engaged with the environment (and not focusing enough on me). This was actually a pretty slow response from my dogs (and child 😂) but everyone thinks it's the best game ever!

Well this little man (the fluffy one, not the human one) gave me a fright this evening when he got heat stroke 🫠 luckily we noticed straight away, we have a great vets and we got there in 10 minutes. So after a cool shower and some chicken he was happily trotting around the vets and being his usual lovely fluffy self.

I've never had an animal develop heat stroke before and it was scary how quickly he went from fine to completely floppy! So keep an extra close eye on all your animals over the next few days, know the signs of heat stroke and what to do and keep them in the cool!

Predatory substitute training 🦌🐿️

One of the biggest challenges with recall is working around a dog’s prey drive. Laika’s prey drive is incredibly high, especially around deer, but this morning we headed out to an area where we knew there would be plenty about- we spotted two herds grazing during our walk.

When we’re in areas with lots of wildlife, I use Laika’s prey drive to my advantage to keep her engaged with me rather than focused on the environment. We’ll usually use something like this fluffy tug toy or a flirt pole, something she can chase, catch, tug with, and ultimately “win”.

It’s taken a lot of practice to get to this point, but the hard work is worth it. Being able to walk past deer without worrying about her disappearing over the horizon in pursuit of them.
