After a grand adventure and a little holiday here with us at Debenham Vets, Timothy (the very female tortoise) has been reunited with her family with whom she has lived with for over 50 years.

As a team we have all loved the quiet company, surprising increase in speed that came with the hot weather and the opportunities Timothy created for us all to go out into the garden with her and just stop and enjoy the moment….

One of our Senior RVN’s, Kay, is speaking at the training event today on veterinary approach to euthanasia. It is incredibly rewarding to see two of our former RVN’s also speaking from the nursing and perspectives. We have protected time for euthanasia every day at Debenham Vets and regularly review what works well for our patients and clients. It is great to see this holistic approach from the BVNA considering the impact on the professional involved too and a great session for our newer RVN’s to participate in. It can be really hard to speak to us after losing a pet, but we are always grateful for feedback and what you tell us has helped to develop our services - what have you found has eased the process?

We are looking for someone to lead and mentor our ACA team as our current head leaves to pursue a career in human medicine.

We offer the opportunity to work within a multidisciplinary practice, widening your knowledge and advancing your skill set beyond first opinion practice. No two days are the same and there is always something interesting or different to learn and take part in.

This senior role is incredibly rewarding as you train and build clinical skills for the ACA’s, taking them from veterinary novices to knowledgeable assistants and provide essential support for our clinical teams.

Our ACA’s follow a weekly rota covering multiple areas of the practice; first opinion, wards, surgical referral, ophthalmology, lab and reception. The shift pattern varies over 6 weeks and roles vary depending on the assigned area.

Overall you are expected to assist the vets and nurses with the flow of the day. As the senior ACA you will complete managerial tasks in addition and time is allocated on the rota for these, to include competency training, 1-2-1 meetings, designing new protocols, liaising with heads of area, rota management and more.

Previous veterinary experience is essential and further training will be provided.

Everyone in our team is encouraged to explore their professional interests and we pride ourselves on enabling each member to reach their full potential. We are an aspirational team and would like to welcome someone who has the drive, resilience and eye for detail that this role requires along with a desire to contribute to a supportive team.

For a full role description, to arrange a conversation or apply with CV and covering letter please email us at:

If you are thinking of travelling with your pet, your planning needs an update.

Since Wednesday, pet travel from the UK has changed. It is no longer possible to travel with your pet using an EU pet passport, even if your pet originated in the EU and has an updated EU passport. Only owners whose main residence is within the EU are able to use EU pet passports for travel with their pets.

As UK residents you now need to obtain an AHC to travel abroad with your pet for each trip (which must be issued within 10 days of your travel).

There is not yet any clarity on the documentation required to prove main residence or how this will be enforced - but the stress and costs of being prevented from travel at a border with your pet are some of the very worst holiday experiences….

We can’t wait to start the week with Hollie after her surgery course with in Berlin. This course is a favourite with our veterinary ophthalmology team and never fails to bring high reward - one of the reasons we don’t set limits on our CPD budgets is because we love our team being able to follow their passions and achieve as much as they want to
