🌱🐮 𝐑𝐢𝐬𝐤 𝐨𝐟 𝐆𝐫𝐚𝐬𝐬 𝐒𝐭𝐚𝐠𝐠𝐞𝐫𝐬 (𝐇𝐲𝐩𝐨𝐦𝐚𝐠𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐚𝐞𝐦𝐢𝐚)🐮🌱

Grass staggers is a true veterinary emergency and can quickly become fatal if not recognised and treated promptly.

⚠️ 𝐖𝐚𝐭𝐜𝐡 𝐨𝐮𝐭 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐬𝐞 𝐬𝐢𝐠𝐧𝐬:
🔹 Ear twitching or increased sensitivity to noise (hyperaesthesia)
🔹 Muscle tremors, staggering, or collapse
🔹 Spasmodic/frequent urination and defaecation
🔹 Poor appetite
🔹 Reduced milk yield
🔹 Increased heart rate
🔹 Sudden death
🔹 A sub-acute form may develop gradually over 3–4 days

🌱 𝐖𝐡𝐲 𝐝𝐨𝐞𝐬 𝐢𝐭 𝐡𝐚𝐩𝐩𝐞𝐧?
Rapidly growing spring grass is often low in magnesium. Combined with:
• low dry matter content
• rapid passage through the rumen
• high protein levels
• high potassium levels
This can reduce magnesium absorption and lead to dangerously low blood magnesium levels.

𝐖𝐡𝐲 𝐢𝐬 𝐦𝐚𝐠𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐢𝐮𝐦 𝐬𝐨 𝐢𝐦𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐚𝐧𝐭?
Magnesium is an essential mineral for ruminants and cannot be stored in the body. Animals therefore rely on a consistent daily intake to help prevent grass staggers.
