This is a conversation with a lead. Tia isn’t very confident, so I’m teaching her to deal with small amounts of pressure and how to turn the pressure off. The lead is a fantastic tool for communicating. You can see how the scary bed and steps become easier for her to deal with as we progress.

This dog is extremely reactive. It’s down to her genetics and not a great start in life. Even though she has been lucky to end up with a great family now. She has had 2 trainers. I don’t think you can punish nerve out of a dog, you need trust, patience and knowledge and really handsome Rottweiler called Biggie boy. My Biggie has helped me work with many dogs and I trust him.

✨ Reading Dogs Differently ✨

One thing I’ve noticed in my work is how differently trainers can read the same dog. Recently, I’ve been meeting dogs who carry genetic fear—and unfortunately, some of them have been met with heavy corrections.

The result? A dog that looks suppressed on the outside, but inside is still scared, still reacting, and now also worried about the next correction. Fear can’t be corrected out of a dog.

Instead, my approach is to change the emotional response. I don’t tell the dog to “get over it”—I show them that I understand they’re scared, and that I’ll take care of them. With these dogs, the first step is often removing the equipment that’s been used to punish, and rebuilding trust.

I want the dog to know: I’ve got your back.

That doesn’t mean chaos—there are still clear boundaries and communication. But the goal is no punishment, just choices and clarity. My own dog Angel is amazing at this work—she interacts calmly, and if another dog is inappropriate, she’ll let them know in a fair way.

We’re now working with our second dog in a row through this program, helping them find safety, confidence, and calm.

Simple training advice. Nearly every single home visit i go to i listen to the problem then say put a lead on the dog. The lead gives you consistency ,especially whilst you teaching a new behaviour.
