We’ve all heard it:
“No foot, no horse” & “Prevention is better than cure”
It’s true, having a skilled hoof care professional is absolutely essential.
BUT you have more power over your horse’s hooves than you might think!

Focus on what you can control:
🌱 Balanced nutrition
🧼 Clean hooves
⚖️ Healthy weight management
📅 Regular hoof care schedule
🌳 Manage the environment
🏇 An appropriate and varied workload
🔧 Regular check-ups with other professionals and equipment checks

Of course, some things are out of our hands:
Conformation, age, weather, wear and tear, field gymnastics and all the other inventive ways horses find to injure themselves.

The point is: you matter.
You are the front line of 'team healthy hooves!'
Consistent, proactive hoof care really adds up.

🪄 Remember it's a rasp not a wand 🪄
Without your cooperation, even the most skilled professionals can’t hold off the effects of daily damage forever. (It’s like asking your dentist to keep your teeth perfect when you eat Haribo for breakfast and play ice hockey without a mouthguard).

Sad truth

Not my post, but a worrying and important read. Originally shared anonymously in a horse group, so I can't credit the writer.

Seeing lots of posts “looking for farrier”...

Do you know why so many are looking for a farrier??

There are now less farriers in the UK than the last 20 years.

1 in 3 farriers are over 50 years old. (Edited due to revised figures) (so within 10 years we might loose 1/3rd if farriers simply due to slowing/retiring

No one is wanting to train as a farrier.

There was 4 farrier colleges.
Now 1 has closed and 1 didn’t have enough interest to take an enrolment this year.

That’s 2 colleges with less than 8 in a class. And it takes 4 years to train…

Farriery prices will rise dramatically in the following 5 years.
Parts of Europe already pay €300 a set regularly.

Supply and demand unfortunately.

♥️ your farrier, respect, support, and be the best client you can be

To become an apprentice :

You need GCSE’s A-C including English and Math.

It’s also very expensive to train apprentices now.

So a 21 year old apprentice (3rd & 4th year) can take home £24K in wages, costs about £5k in extra insurance, PPE, tools, etc.

So that’s £29k a year out of the bosses pocket. Actually resulting in the training farrier (who needs to sit more exams to take on an apprentice, taken at his own costs of ~£5k) taking home less money than the apprentice.

So… training farriers take on more work…. To cover costs, end up in the VAT.. charge more… loose work.

Apprentice goes to college as a resident for 4 weeks twice a year… boss is then left alone to shoe double the amount of horses as his help is away…

Result is… apprentices are not worth the effort or money.

Resulting in even fewer farriers coming forward.

It’s believed wales has only 1 training farrier now.

Scotland is believed to have only 8 apprentices.

I believe it to be worse in Ireland :(
