What other challenges could you face with the colder weather coming?
Cold weather increases the risk of impaction colic in horses mainly because lower temperatures cause reduced water intake and less movement.
The Link Between Cold Weather and Colic Dehydration: Horses often drink significantly less water if it is colder, which dries out digestive contents in the gut.
Increased Dry Forage: Horses eat more hay to generate internal body heat during the colder weather.
Dry forage combined with low water consumption easily forms a blockage.
Reduced Mobility: Bad weather or stable confinement mean less natural movement, which slows down gastrointestinal motility (the movement of food through the digestive tract).
How Massage Helps Boosts Circulation: Bodywork and massage raise skin temperature and enhance blood flow, helping to relax tight, cold muscles and reduce overall systemic stress.
Encourages Relaxation and GI Motility: Releasing tension in the poll, neck, and back areas through gentle equine massage promotes general nervous system relaxation, which positively influences gut function.
(Note: Professional bodywork complements, but never replaces, veterinary care during a acute colic emergency).

I know... its only just started to get cooler but what does Autumn mean for your horses muscles and how can i help.

Is the autumn chill making your horse stiff? 🍂
As the leaves change and the temperature drops, you might notice your horse feeling a bit different under saddle. Just like us, horses react physically to the autumn shift! The colder weather, increased stable time, and growing winter coats can take a major toll on your horse's musculoskeletal system. Here is what is happening under the surface right now:
Cold air reduces muscle elasticity. Chilly weather restricts blood flow, making muscles tight and slow to warm up.
More time in the stable means less natural movement. Less moving around means joints and muscles lose their natural lubrication.
Winter blankets can restrict movement. Heavy or poorly fitting rugs can pinch the shoulders and wither area, causing compensation patterns.
How you can help your horse this week:Double your warm-up time: Spend an extra 5 to 10 minutes walking on a long rein before asking for any collected or intense work.
Check blanket fit: Make sure rugs aren't pulling tight across the chest or rubbing the shoulders.
Maximize turnout: Even a few hours of natural movement keeps the muscles loose and happy.
Keep them moving beautifully by having regular bodywork during seasonal changes, this is essential to catch tension before it turns into discomfort or performance issues.

Wow. That was a busy weekend at Weston Lawns Equestrian for the Ekko Equestrian - Rebecca & Keri Bates dressage championships. Lots of riders left super relaxed, including current internet star and bridleless rider Mia, who couldn't help popping in before her big demo evening as she realises how important a balanced rider is to their horse. Another highlight to the weekend was meeting a super combination with a brilliant young rider that just knocked me sideways with her calm test (that she remembered herself!!!) And smashed an amazing score to win her championship class. Meeting up with some of my current clients, that smashed the weekend and I am so proud of you all and then to top it off getting messages from other people that had their horses done between tests, saying the horse smashed its second test with a larger percentage and in some cases, produced a personal best!!! What more could you ask for from a weekend.. I am exhausted but also so grateful for everyone who chose to come to see me this weekend. This is a fantastic venue with an incredible team that run the dressage... Thank you for having me again and I will be back soon!
