Equine Dentistry in the Performance Horse

Driven by Precision. Dedicated to Performance.

At ROS Equine, we recognise that optimal oral health is essential for achieving and maintaining peak athletic performance. Subtle dental imbalances can have far-reaching effects — from reduced feed efficiency and bit acceptance to compromised biomechanics and even training resistance.

Our dentistry service is precision-led and performance-focused.
Routine dental assessments go far beyond just “floating teeth.” We perform a comprehensive oral examination — including sedation, a full mouth speculum, and motorised equipment — to ensure balanced occlusion and early detection of abnormalities such as:
• Sharp enamel points and hooks
• Wave mouth or shear mouth conformation
• Wolf teeth and blind or displaced canines
• Periodontal disease or diastema
• Fractured or missing teeth

Poor dental alignment can lead to pain, stiffness through the poll and jaw, head carriage issues, and even changes in gait — all of which can affect competitive outcomes. Our team works closely with riders, trainers, and farriers to support whole-horse performance.

Whether preparing for a season or maintaining longevity in sport, dentistry is a vital part of your horse’s care plan.

Equine Asthma in the Performance Horse
Optimising respiratory health for athletic success

At ROS Equine, we recognise that optimal respiratory function is fundamental to peak athletic performance. Equine Asthma, previously termed Inflammatory Airway Disease (IAD) or Recurrent Airway Obstruction (RAO), is a common but often underdiagnosed condition affecting competition horses of all levels.

From subtle decreases in stamina to persistent coughing or nasal discharge, equine asthma can significantly impact performance. The condition is driven by airway inflammation and hypersensitivity, often triggered by environmental dust, allergens, and stabling practices.

What we look for:
• Increased respiratory effort at rest or during exercise
• Chronic coughing, particularly when warming up
• Poor recovery after exertion
• Exercise intolerance or lack of expected performance

Our approach:
ROS Equine provides a comprehensive sports medicine-led evaluation that includes dynamic respiratory endoscopy, airway cytology, and lung function assessments. This enables us to tailor both medical treatment and environmental management strategies—crucial for long-term control.

We work closely with riders, trainers, and yard staff to optimise stable environments and implement preventative strategies, ensuring horses can breathe easier and perform at their best.

Driven by Precision. Dedicated to Performance.
