Well this beautiful young lady fills me with pride once again!!

We’ve spent many days (seems like forever) driving around, sometimes arguing when have had a slight bum clenching moment, but generally great times and lots of crap food and even worse coffees!

It hasn’t been a smooth run (as always where we’re concerned). We’d booked an intensive course online - which never came through. 😩 We had a test booked, for 1 week away, no driving instructor and no car (which was test approved(little car a convertible and her car an auto)).
I managed to find a wonderful driving instructor and human Sharon Charlton Driving Instructor. Who was willing to take Matilda Marshall for an assessment and lesson prior to her test and then with her car through the test which was this morning at 07:13. Sharon you are literally an angel 😇. Without you, this wouldn’t have been possible.
So I wave goodbye this morning in the dark, wind and rain and they’re off.
My gif, my nerves…..
No need!!!! She comes back with a pass and
NO MINORS!!!!!!
Proud doesn’t cut it!!!
You did it baby girl and the world is your oyster! Be safe, be thoughtful, be wise and bloody explore and enjoy it!!!
Love you more than words!!!

This weekend we headed off to Brinsbury for GDRC Dressage with 8 horses! What were we thinking????? I'm actually not too sure :-? We had new ones and our challenged ones and of course Mr P... We manage to plait wash and make them look as presentable as possible with the time allowed. Matilda is now....

A lovely day out supporting the Racehorse Sanctuary @ Brinsbury Equine with the two Gingers, Glenda & P. Some lovely rounds and great practice. We then had the added bonus of bumping into Katie Treasure-jones with the legend that is Fraggle! I think she only attended to support her friend on humongous & gorgeous Billy, but ended up flying around the 80 & 90cm!!
Great job all!!!

Our x-country training day out...

Cor blimey, we've had an adventure. What was a simple day out x-country training. There's never a dull moment! 🤣

So, we've booked Munstead 10-12 (un beknown to me) I thought we'd got the afternoon slot as I'd requested Matilda to do. So the night prior she announces that we've got Munstead @ 10:00. I'm like, no way! I'm jet lagged from our trip away and the yard needs sorting & finishing before we go anywhere... Morning comes, I've Night Nursed myself to sleep as hadn't slept Since being home, had the best sleep EVER and into the morning (which is unheard of) to have Matilda clattering around me to announce we need to leave as we have to get to Munstead. ARE YOU KIDDING?! It's already 9:40. Poor Terri who's accompanying us is clearly waiting (very patiently) to go, not knowing any of what's gone on behind closed doors.

So, I quickly get ready head on out like a groggy mess and we load up and head off...

We arrive 11:15 ish, quick tack up and off we go!

We start with a couple of warm up fences and all horses and humans are flying!

Terri and the little pocket rocket 'Rocky' are literally on fire and they start heading off and smashing everything in site. Matilda & Mr P are also doing so well until we approach the ditch 🤦🏻‍♀️ He didn't like it! (Never had an issue before, but this one he's not keen on). So the lovely Terri & the pocket rocket led him over like a dream. He had a major issue with the owl hole too, which again was led over. He still wasn't too keen, so we had to have a few attempts and for him to find his confidence from Matilda. It took a while, but they smashed it!

Terri had gone - flying into the distance taking it all in her stride. Matilda & P catch them up, it took myself Madi & Henry (the dog) a little longer. We meet up with them again to see Mr P saying no again (this is so not in his character, but they're still a new partnership and as I repeatedly told Matilda... She needs to ride right up to and over the fence, he may have talent, but he's by no means a push button ride. (Which she found out pretty quickly). The 'NO' from Mr P was the dreaded drop fence!!! This is Mr P's nemesis. (He's had a pretty bad experience over a drop (probably a nasty rotational at his 3* which is how he became available to his previous owners, and now us. We found this out at our first event and he was literally prettified when we approached a large drop and he just crumbled. At this point he had a Pat and we retired. Me never really asking it if him again, until yesterday, with my daughter on board)🤦🏻‍♀️🤷🏻‍♀️ don't ask! Well, he obviously said no, even after a lead, so super star Rocky and Terri keep coming and he eventually takes his leap of faith... OMG! I'm about sobbing! I am so bloomin' proud of the pair of them. Matilda listened to all instruction and rode him beautifully, filling him with the confidence and compassion he needed to be able to face his absolute fear! He went on jumped a few more and finished on the bigger one. Proud doesn't cut it!!

We move on, we've now caught up with Terri who's jumping within her comfort zone. Oh no, no, no! We may come out to enjoy, take a few comfort fences, but we then need to push ourselves out of that to achieve a little more. So unfortunately for her, I'm there and requesting the 90cm fences. Both horse and rider are more than capable, just need to find the strength within and control the nerves. They are smashing it, we get to a much wider fence which she's clearly worried about and we have a stop... oh no, come on, we can do it. We take a moment, gather ourselves, jump the smaller and then straight back around to the 90cm with a perfect jump!!

What an achievement for both. We ended with a play in the water, which Mr P enjoyed a little too much 😬🤦🏻‍♀️

A great hour had and we head back, load up and go to pull out. I've checked my mirrors and then all of a sudden there's a palomino backside level with my window. Jees, that could have been horrible! 😫 The lady returning to her box had obviously seen we were about to leave, still took her horse into the smallest of gaps as we were pulling out. My goodness, we were so lucky that we were going so slowly! My heart was in my mouth, I'm sweating and just in absolute shock.

All is good, horse is ok, lady wouldn't acknowledge me, so not much we could do there.

We continue on our journey, the narrow roads upon us and a single decker bus is coming towards us, it's all looking very narrow, so we stop, we are alongside the bus, pull all of our mirrors in and inch by inch creep forwards. No! It's not working, we're going to be attached 🤦🏻‍♀️ FFS!! Can there be anything else? Thankfully, we have a lovely bus driver, but I now need to get out and ask all of the cars behind the bus (there were quite a few) to reverse so that the bus could reverse to the corner where there was no wall and it would allow us to pass safely. A gentleman had also got out of his car and was giving a helping hand.

All cars reversed, I ran back to the lorry as the bus reversed and we managed to get by. The bus driver was wonderful as were the passengers, waving, thumbs up and kisses blown. A couple of grumps in their cars, but ce la vi, we're out, past and safe!

I'm happy to say, the remainder of the journey was pretty boring in comparison, but safe at least!

I'm pleased to say, we arrived home safe and sound!!!

What a day!!! Fantastic horses and riders with huge achievements and not getting stressed when under pressure!!

Loving it!!

Well… that was fun! Xx

Friday Funday!!

Friday Funday!!

What a wonderful sight of two young ladies wanting to work with the horses to help them be the very best they can be in their own skin! How to build confidence and trust - I just love this, as did the horses!

13/10/2022

I imagine every yard owner will read, relate, copy & paste this as I have. This is just absolutely spot on - nothing negative, just very true words.

Lessons learned long and hard in the horse business as a professional.

1. It's easy to fall in love with your customers. They become a family who you spend a lot of time with. However, in the end they will do what's best for themselves. And, for you and them, those paths may not be the same. Prepare to get your heart broken. Keep business and personal relationships separate.

2. People will not always trust in your experience and will second guess you. They will think they know better because they read it in a book, or saw it online. Don't try to be all things to all people. Do what you are good at. Run your barn in a way that you can sleep at night knowing that you did right in your mind by them and their horses. The clients opinion of that may be different than your beliefs, but you have to live with choices that leave you at peace. That may mean confrontation, hard conversations and even asking people to move on for your own peace.

3. Horses are easy 99% of the time. It's the people who come with them that make things complicated.

4. Remember that horses need to be horses.

5. People will always judge you, and have opinions. The better you are, the more haters will have opinions.

6. Success isn't measured by ribbons and show placings. It's measured in happy animals and the quality of their lives.

7. There is always an exception or quirk that doesn't " follow the rules" in horse care. Do what works, not what the books say works.

8. When you get annoyed by seeing somebody's car pull in to the barn, it's time to let that person move on. Your barn should be a happy place. It literally only takes one bad sour apple to ruin the whole atmosphere and dynamic in a barn.

9. Let it go.... if someone moves on don't be upset by it. Ignore what they say. Don't take it personally. Every barn is not a good fit for every person.

10. This is a business. If a person or horse isn't working for you, or the compensation isn't offsetting your cost, it's time for them to go. The exception to this is your retired horses, see #11.

11. Horses only have so many jumps, so many runs, so many rides. Don’t waste your horses. Teach your students they aren’t machines. You owe it to your retired horses to have a safe, comfortable and dignified end. Your schoolies worked for you. When the time comes they can no longer do that, either give them a pleasant retirement, or put them in the ground where you know they are safe. Do not dump them at auctions or onto other people where you are not 100% sure that they will be cared for.

12. There is no shame in euthanasia for a horse owner. Always better a week too early then a second too late. Do not judge anyone for their reasons for doing this.

13. Most clients fall Into two categories. Those who are "high maintenance", open in their opinions and will confront situations head on. The second is the quiet type who will not say a word and will not openly talk with you about their expectations or issues. You have no idea they have a problem until it's too late. The people in between these two are the clients you want. They will be long term and make life easy.

14. Know your worth. KNOW YOUR WORTH. Your time and experience has a monetary value. Don't do things for free, even if you like the person. Every bit of time or effort you give to clients has value. So when you don't value your effort, neither will a client. They will come to expect "freebies", which always leads to resentment from someone.

15. Be honest. It's not always easy. But in this business it takes forever to build reputation and seconds to destroy it.

16. Remember horses are dangerous. Always use your best judgment and air on the side of caution when working with horses and students. Their lives and your own life can change in an instant.

17. Get paid up front. Keep good records. People don't go to the grocery store and ask for food they will pay for next week. Good business practices keep everyone honest and sets boundaries for clients.

18. Normalize passing on price increases. Service industries, especially ones like ours always "feel guilty " when raising prices. You are not there to subsidize someone else's horse habit. Prices have been going up on costs, so should your fees.

19. The buck stops with you. Your employees mistakes fall back to your responsibility. Always verify and check on important care aspects of daily activities.

20. Make time for family and rest. Too many of us get burnt out from the stress of expectations in this industry. In the end, boarders and students come and go. Your family is who you will have left.

Thanks for reading my thoughts. I hope it can help support some of you feeling burnt out, and maybe help some people who are starting out in their journey into this industry.

Not my words but very true….in most cases, but I am very fortunate to call some of my clients my friends, and that will never change 💕

It’s a hard business, but I wouldn’t change my life for the world 🌍
