🐾 We’re looking for a Saturday Assistant! 🐾

Our lovely Willow is heading off to university to study Veterinary Medicine 🎓🐶 and while we’re going to miss her enormously, we couldn’t be prouder of her and all that she’s achieved! ❤️

This does mean we’re now looking for a Saturday Assistant to join our team, helping with general cleaning and answering the phones.

We’re looking for someone who is reliable, friendly and willing to get stuck in. No previous veterinary experience is necessary — we’re very happy to train the right person! 🐾

Today we've had a beautiful 11 week old kitten weighing only 800 grams, owned by friends of the practice, brought to the surgery with obvious lameness and swelling to her left front leg. David rearranged his morning appointments (a big thank you to Kirstie for seeing many of David's clients) in order to investigate her injury. Radiographs revealed a nasty fracture to Barbie's left elbow. David operated immediately as he was conscious of a strong chance of permanent damage to the elbow affecting her mobility. We are pleased to report after placing pins and wires in her elbow she now has a normal range of movement and we don't envisage any future issues. She is now happily recuperating at home with her brother Ken.

Attached are the images of Barbie post surgery, the radiograph detailing the fracture and a video showing the successful repair to allow movement to her elbow.

We are actively seeking an experienced RVN to join our dedicated team at Conway Road Veterinary Surgery. No OOH cover is required. The ideal candidate will be conscientious and caring and a strong team player who can partake in all aspects within the surgery. The position will entail some clerical duties. Competitive salary offered, Pension Scheme, CPD allowance and RCVS fees covered by the practice.
The practice has existed for over 30 years and has been under the present ownership since 2015, during which time the surgery has been extensively refurbished and extended.
We are a member of the RCVS Practice Standards Scheme (PSS) and a RCVS Training Practice. We are also a member of XL Vets (xlvets.co.uk, which is an independent group of practices pursuing clinical excellence). The surgery provides a varied caseload with a surgical bias and we pride ourselves on being a friendly, client focused team.

Grass Seed Season – A Small Problem That Can Become a Big One** 🐾

With the warmer weather, we're seeing more cats and dogs coming into the practice with grass seeds causing painful problems.

Grass seeds may look harmless, but their pointed shape allows them to work their way into your pet's skin, ears, eyes, paws and even up the nose. Unfortunately, they don't break down naturally and can travel deeper into the body, often requiring veterinary treatment to remove them.

⚠️ Watch out for signs such as:

• Excessive licking or chewing at a paw

• Head shaking or scratching at an ear

• Red, swollen or weepy eyes

• Sneezing repeatedly or nosebleeds

• Swelling, limping or small wounds between the toes

🐱 Cats aren't immune either, especially adventurous cats who enjoy exploring long grass and fields.

How you can help prevent problems:

✔️ Check your pet's paws, ears and coat after walks or time outdoors.

✔️ Keep the hair between paw pads neatly trimmed if appropriate.

✔️ Avoid areas with long, dry grasses where possible.

✔️ Groom long-haired pets regularly during the summer months.

If you notice any of the signs above, it's best not to wait. Grass seeds can quickly become more painful and difficult to remove the longer they're left.

We recently had the lovely Cocker Spaniel Lola in the surgery needing our assistance due to a large grass seed becoming embedded in her ear caused by her love of rolling in the grass. Due to the sensitivity in her ear she required sedation for the grass seed to be successfully removed. She now has a snood to wear as a preventative measure whilst walking in grassy areas.

Pet Fire Safety - Have you got an emergency plan in place in the event of a fire in your home? Our furry family members rely on us to keep them safe in every situation, including the unexpected.

Here are a few simple ways to help protect your pets:

🐶 Keep collars and leads close to exits in case of an emergency.

🐱 Make sure your pets are microchipped and your contact details are up to date.

🚪 Have an evacuation plan that includes every member of your family, pets included.

🕯️ Never leave candles or open flames unattended around curious pets.

It’s nearly the weekend! This one’s for the cat lovers among us!

Did you know? Cats are experts at hiding when they're not feeling well. That's why even small changes in their behaviour can be worth paying attention to.

Keep an eye out for:
🐾 Eating or drinking less than usual
🐾 Hiding more often
🐾 Changes in litter tray habits
🐾 Sleeping much more than normal
🐾 Less interest in playing or interacting

If something doesn't seem quite right, it's always better to get it checked sooner rather than later.
