6 year old lurcher Poppy was ready to play after her last hydro session. Poppy and her older sister Jess come for regular laser and hydrotherapy after they both required separate surgeries on their back legs last year.

They are both fab patients and making great progress with their sessions. Jess has built up over 1cm of muscle diameter which is amazing for a 13 year old dog and Poppy had the chance to trial the pool for the first time which she loved!

Well done girls🥰🐾🐕

I is IVDD

Whilst intervertebral disc disease is more common in breeds such as Dachshunds and French bulldogs, it’s important for all dog owners to be aware of the warning signs.

In mild-moderate cases, the dog may still be able to walk but will show behavioural signs of pain consisting of reduced appetite, lethargy and/or unusual aggression when being touched or stroked. The more obvious physical signs may consist of postural changes such as a low head position and hunching through the back, as well as loss of hindlimb strength, a wobbly "drunken-like" movement to the back legs and incorrect paw placement otherwise known as "knuckling".

Noticing these signs and taking your dog straight to the vets can be imperitive in getting a quick diagnosis. Early intervention such as surgery may be required to reduce risk of the condition worsening before starting rehabilitation consisting of strict rest, medical management, physiotherapy and gentle hydrotherapy later in their recovery💗

H couldn’t be anything other than Hydrotherapy!

Hydrotherapy forms the core of most of our treatment plans as its versatile nature makes it suitable for so many different rehabilitation cases!

Hydrotherapy utilises the natural properties of warm water to have an effect:

💧 Buoyancy minimises the impact of body weight on the joints allowing movement to feel much more comfortable
💧 Resistance helps build muscle strength and cardiovascular fitness
💧 The temperature of the water is kept between 28-32 degrees to promote muscle relaxation and improved circulation
💧 Hydrostatic pressure is the result of the density of the water which helps stimulate nerves and reduce swelling

By performing hydrotherapy in either the pool or underwater treadmill, we can accelerate recovery from surgery or help manage long term conditions such as osteoarthritis💦🐾💙

17 year old Paddy was in today to see Amy for a McTimoney Chiropractic treatment and to trial kinesiology taping for his back legs.

McTimoney therapy is based on the principles of chiropractics for humans but adjusted to provide a very gentle approach suited specifically for animals. Amy comes to the practice once a month for her patients to help realign the musculoskeletal system to restore range of motion and balance 🩻🙌🏼🐕

Our physiotherapist Esme then applied kinesiotape to help stimulate the muscles of Paddy’s thigh and improve sensation to his paw to improve his proprioception and gait patterning 🐾💪🏼🐶

If you want to find out whether your dog would benefit from a McTimoney session or to trial kinesiotape, feel free to get in touch to discuss with the team further📞🥰

Laser therapy is something we integrate into our hydrotherapy and physiotherapy sessions on a daily basis. Most dogs learn to enjoy the gentle warming sensation of the treatment and we often see improvements in their mobility straight away!

Therapevo are a UK-based company offering a range of electrotherapy products for both pet owners and therapists to integrate into their treatment plans. We’ve recently been working alongside Therapevo to try out their Powercure Pro device and we’re seeing great results with regular use at home!

If red light therapy is something you think your dog would benefit from, please feel free to get in touch on email via [email protected] and our rehab team are happy to answer any questions you might have💛

G is Gait Patterning🐾🐾

In its most simplest terms, a dogs ‘gait’ refers to the way it moves. In rehabilitation the most common gaits you’ll hear us refer to is walk, trot and pace.

🦮 Walk is the slowest gait in a dog and consists of 4 individual limb movements whereby there are always 3 paws making contact with the ground. This makes the walk the most stable way of going whilst also providing the lowest degree of forces on the joints.

🐕 Trot on the other hand is a 2 beat gait whereby diagonal pairs of limbs move in coordination. Dogs will often choose to move at a trot to cover further distance in a energy efficient manner as the spine is able to stay relatively straight.

🐩 A gait we often see in rehabilitation is the ‘pace’ where the legs on each side of the body move together in unison, creating a side-to-side swaying motion of the body. Whilst pacing is common in certain breeds, it can also indicate fatigue or joint discomfort.

If you’ve identified something unusual about the way your dog moves and would be keen to find out what it might mean, get in touch for a physiotherapy assessment💙

F is for Fitness🏃🏽‍♂️

Key to any dogs quality of life, health and fitness allows our dogs to be active and comfortable. Our physiotherapy plans don’t just apply to patients with injuries or post-surgery. We commonly manage cases with fitness and conditioning exercises to help with injury prevention and improving sporting performance!

Check out the video to see Jack Russell Milo working hard at his physiotherapy exercises which aim to improve his core strength, muscle engagement, balance and proprioception💪🏼🐾

Dewi has been coming for swimming and laser sessions since September last year as he had been limping on his front legs. He was later diagnosed with elbow dysplasia following a CT scan at the practice🩻

In December it was decided that surgery was the best option to improve his condition and since then he has come on leaps and bounds in his strength, going from 75cm of muscle on his right front leg to 81cm!💪🏼

Now Dewi’s muscle mass is equal and he’s back to running on the beach. As he loves his swimming, Dewi is going to keep coming for hydro once a month so we can check all is well and catch any potential issues before they arise💙🐾🌟

E is Exercise Plans!

Each patient’s recovery is individual to them so our treatment and exercise plans are catered specifically to their needs depending on their goals🌟

Static exercises such as weight shifting improve limb loading and posture, whilst passive techniques can improve joint mobility and resolve stiffness

Strengthening exercises will then progress as the dog improves, integrating squat movements and cavaletti poles to promote muscle engagement💪🏼
