URGENT 🚨 | This dog was found yesterday afternoon (26/10/25) next to the central reservation on the A40 dual carriageway near Whitchurch/Symonds Yat.

Lucky for him, a kind couple stopped and quickly got him to safety, taking him to an out of hours Vets in Newport, unfortunately it is believed that he had been hit by a vehicle.

If you are his owner or know the owner please ask them to contact Hereford and Worcester Animal Rescue ASAP on 07751549770.

At this time of year, we receive lots of enquiries regarding acorns and oak trees (Quercus species). We have seen an influx in calls this year as 2025 has been declared as a Mast Year. This is when some trees produce a large amount of fruit, seeds and nuts, and happens every few years.

Ingestion of acorns by dogs is common during the autumn months. Following a large, one off ingestion of acorns, vomiting and diarrhoea may occur in dogs, both of which may be bloody. Lethargy, abdominal tenderness and inappetence can also be seen and there is also the risk of gastrointestinal obstruction. There have been reports of kidney and liver damage following substantial or repeat ingestion of both acorns and the plant itself, a scenario more commonly seen in horses and ruminants.

Oak toxicity predominantly affects grazing species such as cattle, horses and sheep, but it can affect dogs and cats too.

📞If you suspect your pet has been exposed to oak, call the Animal PoisonLine on 01202 509000 for advice. Veterinary professionals can call VPIS on 020 7305 5055.

Hello all!

We're teaming up with APVet and Vaccicheck to provide access to titre testing again on the 6th of December 2025: get in touch with APVet to book - [email protected]

But wait........... What IS Vaccicheck titre testing....?

VacciCheck is a simple and affordable titre test, designed to monitor an animal’s immunity status as a result of vaccination, in order to confirm protection and avoid unnecessary vaccination in immunized pets. A single blood test will assess a pet’s immune status for core feline or canine diseases.

VacciCheck measures antibody levels against canine core vaccines components (parvovirus, distemper, and infectious hepatitis), and against feline core vaccine components (panleukopenia, herpesvirus and calicivirus), in order to assess the pet’s immunization following vaccination.

The purpose of titre testing is to determine protective immunity in puppies/kittens, to determine revaccination intervals in adult dogs/cats, and to manage infectious disease outbreaks in shelters.

It is extremely important to vaccinate dogs/cats in order to allow them to build immunity and fight diseases. However, due to a great variability in their ability to build their protection, and a great variability in the duration of immunity in each dog/cat, titre testing is the only available tool to help vets make a smart evidence-based decision regarding revaccination. By titre testing pets, vets can determine whether revaccination is needed or not and prevent possible vaccination side effects.
