How have I let this happen?

These two bouncing beauts have been walking with me for weeks now and I've not introduced them 😳 Shame on me.

Drum roll please 🥁🥁🥁 for Leia and Murray (Collie cross and Labrador respectively). Oh my goodness, they're a WHIRLWIND 🤣

If I could bottle their energy and enthusiasm, I'd put those tictoc snake oil charlatans right out of business because these two are the real deal!!! 💥

They're best mates with each other, that's clear as day and utterly adorable ❤️ but they also spend time independently mucking about with their new pals.... Leia and Rufus have a full on blossoming romance and Murray will happily shoulder barge his way through a speed race with Beau or Gus, Lab style! They're both ACE fun and have spiced things up so well, that we all go home panting (me included) 😆

I gave my old boy, Brock, a heavy duty trim ✂️ Now he has his own rug. Literally, his *own* rug!

I know I'm going to get some grief for doing this because Brock is a double coated Border Collie and in the grooming world, it's said that you should never clip a double coat because 1) a double coat acts as a two way insulator 2) the coat will never grow back properly.

So why did I do this? Because I've read several pieces of well researched information regarding air flow around the body and how thick, heavy coats prevent this. If the coat was insulating a static object, this may be the case but dogs are not static - they're always moving, breathing, panting, digesting - generating body heat through active muscle use. Groomers from around the world with many decades of experience have agreed.

As we know, panting (the only real way a dog can expell heat) is inefficient because the act of panting generates body heat in order to expell it.

In warmer weather (never mind the heat waves) Brock is panting more than the average dog. He even struggles in the winter with central heating and my house is notoriously cold!

Cue my decision to finally clip him entirely. Something I've pondered over for years and spoken to several vets about, especially as he ages and struggles to regulate and comfortably settle.

So what about his beautiful coat? Good question. It was a beautiful coat, he's always recieved compliments for his looks. But life isn't a beauty pageant and he certainly couldn't give two hoots about his looks! (we should all be more dog). What he does care about is quality of life.

Side note - in case you're curious, it takes two growth cycles for the coat to return to its full glory.

I clipped him last week in the height of the heatwave and the difference was immediate. He slept well, he played with toys and he bounced through the woods with renewed vigour. It's been a game changer.

The only thing I regret is not doing it sooner.

I'll take a proper photo of him tomorrow and bob it in the comments with a 'before' for comparison

Dogs first. Always.

I've had to make tough decisions this week about which walks to cancel and which to start early in the day.

It's not a decision I take lightly because I make a commitment to my clients to be there on set days and they rely on that regularity.

However, this week has been the exception to the rule and most of my walks have been called off.

Is this good for business?
Definitely not.
Is this good for the dogs' welfare? ABSOLUTELY YES!

And I would do it again, in the next heatwave.

So this is my opportunity to thank all my wonderfully understanding, dog loving clients, who all agreed without question, that skipping walks was the right decision. Thank you for putting your dogs first ❤️

.."your care, knowledge and expertise is what we need and why you're always so busy...your thoughtfulness and advice are way more than I could've imagined when you took him on..." 🥺🙏

This is also a big shout out to all my friends in dog walking, training and grooming who have also prioritised their dogs over appointments ️🙌🫡 You guys rock!

Meet Frank 👋 Frank's joined the crew a few weeks ago and has smashed it - such a confident little dude. On the first day, he jumped straight into the van crate like he an old pro. He's so curious, especially when it comes to sniffing butts (not mine, thankfully) and peemails. Frank's already mates with Frodo his look-a-like, they'll be known as F&F from now on 😆

The end of a beautiful era 💔
Darling Annie passed away last week at 14 years young. Please join me in sending condolences to her family who are devastated. We can only imagine how raw they must be feeling. They adopted Annie as a young adult and have given her the dream life she always deserved.

Annie was my wingwoman every day of the week for 10 years, what a privilege to be flanked by a dog of Annie's calibre... she was, quite simply, ace.

Annie was strong, fast, fit and athletic, even at the end. She had so much zest and energy, and a demanding "throw that stick" bark to rival the best guard dog. She gave off all the happy vibes - the other dogs loved being around her, even though she was an independent soul who was happy going her own way. She never had a sad day, always upbeat and reliably happy. Annie's goofy zoomies will stay with me forever.

I'll miss Annie stealing my cheese butties, I'll miss her trying to dictate our walking routes, I'll miss her howling at the church bells, I'll miss her being the first in line for a treat and the last to jump in the van at home time.

Annie, if you're reading this, you'll be missed so very much. Fly high gorgeous girl 🌈
