We are aware of a few videos circulating social media at the moment regarding ibuprofen ingestion in dogs.

Ibuprofen is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID). It is commonly used in people for the relief of pain and inflammation associated with aches and pains, headache, cramps and for the relief of mild fever.

Ibuprofen is a very widely available over-the-counter painkiller. Although well tolerated in people, dogs are very sensitive to ibuprofen and ingestion of even a relatively low dose can cause adverse effects on the gut and the kidneys. A very large overdose can even cause very rapid onset features including convulsions.

☎️Owners can call Animal PoisonLine on 01202 509000 if they are concerned about their pet.

We do not recommend the administration of any human medications without prior consultation with your veterinary surgeon.

💬 True or False? Veterinary nurses just cuddle the animals and clean kennels?

❌ FALSE! ❌ While they do offer comfort and care (and yes, the occasional cuddle!), vet nurses are qualified clinical professionals who are essential to the running of every veterinary practice.

Their role includes:
✔ Monitoring anaesthesia
✔ Assisting in surgery
✔ Running diagnostic tests
✔ Administering treatments
✔ Educating pet owners

This Veterinary Nursing Awareness Month, let’s celebrate the real work our amazing vet nurses do every day! 💚

How lovely, Toad, we're so glad you've found your forever home with Sally 🥰

Meet Toad – from garden stray to pampered lap cat 🐾💙

Toad was brought into our practice after spending 4 years living as a stray in someone’s garden. He arrived severely underweight (just 3.2kg) and suffering with respiratory issues.

After a full examination and blood tests, we discovered Toad is FIV positive (Feline Immunodeficiency Virus) – a condition that means he’ll need to stay indoors or in a secure garden, and be closely monitored for any illnesses due to his compromised immune system.

But Toad’s story has a very happy ending 💫 He was quickly fostered by Sally, one of our amazing RVNs, who works alongside Cats Protection League. It didn’t take long for everyone to realise he’d already found his forever home – and Sally officially adopted him! 🐱💕

Toad is now a healthy 5kg, his respiratory issues are well managed, and he’s living the dream as a very happy (and very loved) lap cat. 🛋️💖

🌟 Meet Charlotte! 🌟

Charlotte joined our team at Stone Lion in 2024 after qualifying as a Registered Veterinary Nurse from the Royal Veterinary College in 2022. Alongside her RVN qualification, she also completed a BSc in Veterinary Nursing with a special focus on anaesthesia.

Charlotte has a real passion for inpatient care and finds it incredibly rewarding to help our patients recover and reunite with their families.

When she’s not in practice, Charlotte loves to get creative—whether it's painting, making art, or baking beautiful cakes! 🎨🍰

💬 True or False? A Registered Veterinary Nurse (RVN) can perform minor surgeries?
✅ TRUE! Veterinary nurses do so much more than many people realise. As long as they’re appropriately trained and working under the direction of a vet, RVNs can perform minor surgical procedures—just not those involving entry into a body cavity.

Veterinary nursing is a skilled and hands-on profession, and we’re proud to celebrate our amazing team this Veterinary Nursing Awareness Month! 💚🐾

Your Easter trolley might be full of delicious treats — but some of them can be dangerous for your pets 🛒🐾 If you're stocking up this weekend, make sure to keep these out of paws’ reach:

🍫 Chocolate eggs – toxic to dogs and cats
🍬 Sugar-free sweets (like jelly beans) – may contain xylitol
🍞 Hot cross buns – raisins and sultanas are highly toxic to dogs
🧄 Onions & garlic – can cause serious illness in cats and dogs
🍖 Cooked lamb bones – can splinter and cause internal injuries
🍷 Alcohol – even a small amount can be harmful or fatal to pets

Keep cupboards shut, counters clear, and baskets up high 📲 Tag a fellow pet parent to spread the word! Wishing everyone a happy, healthy, and pet-safe Easter! 💛🐣

Festive Hazard:
Candles add a warm glow to the holidays, but curious paws and wagging tails can quickly turn them into a hazard! Pets might accidentally knock them over or get too close to the flame 🕯️🐾

Holly advice:
For your pet’s safety, always place candles high and out of reach, and consider using flameless candles for a worry-free holiday vibe.

Fun fact:
Did you know that a dog’s wagging tail can reach speeds of up to 30 mph? That’s fast enough to knock over a candle in a flash! ⚡

22/12/2024

Festive Hazard:
The holiday hustle and bustle is nearly here, and so is the gift wrapping madness! While you are busy wrapping presents, your pet might be eyeing those shiny ribbons and paper. But beware - chewing on them can lead to choking or tummy troubles! 🎁🐾

Holly advice:
While you’re wrapping up gifts, make sure to keep the shiny ribbons, papers as well as sticky tape and gift tags out of your pet’s reach!

Fun fact:
Did you know cats can see more shades of green and blue than humans? So when you’re wrapping gifts, they might be particularly drawn to some shiny, colourful paper ✨🌈

21/12/2024

Festive Hazard:
While holly berries may look festive, they can be dangerous to pets who might be tempted to nibble on them. The berries contain compounds called saponins and cyanogenic glycosides which can cause symptoms like vomiting, diarrhoea, drooling, and, in severe cases, lethargy and difficulty breathing.

Holly advice:
Keep your pet safe this holiday season by keeping holly and other festive plants out of reach. Some plants may look pretty, but they can be harmful if your furry friend gets curious!

Fun fact:
Did you know that dogs have a much stronger sense of smell than humans - about 40 times stronger? This means they’re extra curious about the scents of traditionally festive plants like holly, mistletoe and poinsettia 🌿

20/12/2024

Festive Hazard:
The winter season makes this holiday feel more festive. However, just remember that while winter walks are fun, cold weather can be tough on your pets ❄ 🎅

Holly advice:
Always keep your dog on the lead in icy conditions and avoid areas with frozen ponds or lakes - dogs may not recognise the danger. After a snowy walk, be sure to wipe their paws and belly to remove ice and salt and check for any cracks or redness in their paw pads.

Fun fact:
Did you know dogs have sweat glands only in their paws? That’s why their paws can get extra chilly in the snow! ⛄🐾
