Just a quick note to let everyone know that we are now taking a short break for a week.

There will be no classes running next week while we recharge the batteries and enjoy a little holiday.

Classes will resume on Tuesday 30th June, and we look forward to seeing all our dogs and handlers back then.

Messages may take a little longer than usual to reply to while we’re away, but we’ll get back to everyone as soon as we can.

Thank you all for your continued support, and we hope you and your dogs have a wonderful week too!

A huge thank you to photography student Dave Whiteley for joining us on Wednesday evening and creating these wonderful portraits of our dogs and owners.

Our training venue was transformed into a professional photography studio for the evening, and we’re sure you’ll agree he captured some fantastic images.

Looking through the photos, what stands out most isn’t just the dogs themselves, but the relationships between dogs and owners that develop through training.

From young puppies just starting their journey to dogs continuing to learn new skills, it’s always rewarding to watch confidence grow, communication improve and partnerships develop.

The results are in!

Over the last week, our Sniffer Club members have been taking part in our latest tournament focusing on problem solving.

The dogs were faced with scent problems that required them to work things out for themselves, stay committed to the search and use their noses to overcome the challenge.

It was an incredibly close tournament this time, with a large group of teams all finishing in second place. We simply couldn’t separate them, which is a testament to the fantastic searching we saw across the board.

One sniffer dog team did manage to shine through though…

Advanced training isn’t really about advanced exercises. It’s about training the foundations exceptionally well.

An A recall is still a recall.

Retrieving the judge’s article is still a retrieve.

Heelwork at any speed is still heelwork.

The difference is the understanding, confidence and reliability that comes from practising those skills over and over again in different places, around different distractions and in different situations.

Whatever your goals are, never rush past the basics. Keep revisiting them, keep practising them and keep proofing them.

If you’d like to work on foundational skills such as heelwork, recalls, retrieves, sendaways, agility equipment and nosework, our new UK Dog Sport Skills course starts on 30th June.

Suitable for beginners and experienced handlers alike, and ideal for anyone wanting to sharpen up their skills ahead of our UK Dog Sport competition in October.

What a fantastic weekend up at Banbury Dog Sports Club!

Firstly, a huge thank you to Sheila Smith for organising such a wonderful event, along with all the helpers, judges and stewards who made the weekend possible.

Working in the sunshine amongst the beautiful poppy fields was simply stunning, and it was lovely to spend the day with so many people enjoying training and competing with their dogs.

A massive well done to everyone who competed. We were delighted to come home with qualifications all round!

🏅 Novice

Congratulations to Julie and Bella, who qualified and placed 4th in a large class of 13 competitors.

🏅 Intermediate

Congratulations to Julie and Lexi, who qualified with Excellence and took 1st place.

🏅 Advanced

Congratulations to Linda and Robbie, who qualified at Advanced level. It was a shame to see Robbie lose a little confidence on the day, but he and Linda still came away with a qualification, showing just what a fantastic partnership they are.

And a big well done to Cath and Caio, who qualified with Excellence in their first Advanced competition, placing 2nd.

We’re incredibly proud of all our teams. Competitions aren’t just about placings; they’re about teamwork, training, overcoming challenges and enjoying the journey with our dogs.

As this was our first workshop focused entirely on Understanding the Odour Picture, we’re delighted with the feedback we’ve received.

Our goal was to help handlers better understand how odour behaves, how environmental conditions influence scent movement, and most importantly, how to read and trust the information their dogs are giving them.

It’s fantastic to hear that so many people left with a new perspective on scent detection and a greater understanding of what their dogs are actually doing during a search.

A huge thank you to everyone who attended, asked questions, got involved in the exercises and made the day such a success.

We thoroughly enjoyed sharing our passion for scent detection and, judging by the feedback, this certainly won’t be the last time we run this workshop!

One of the hardest skills for handlers to learn is knowing when to pause and give the dog time to think.

When our dogs are struggling with an exercise, it’s tempting to jump in and help. We might point, repeat a cue, guide them towards the answer, or show them exactly what to do.

But sometimes the greatest learning happens when dogs are given the opportunity to work through a problem for themselves.

Whether it’s learning to run through a hoop or move around a barrel in Hoopers, or learning to climb up or move around a barrier to reach their target odour in scent detection, every successful choice helps build confidence, problem-solving skills, independence & resilience

This doesn’t mean we should leave our dogs to become frustrated. Our job is to make the exercise achievable and support them when needed.

But before stepping in, try pausing for a moment and giving your dog the chance to think.

You might be surprised by what they can work out for themselves.

Hoopers is back!

After a long winter, we’re excited to be bringing Hoopers back to ClickStart Dog Training this summer.

Whether you’re completely new to Hoopers or your dog needs a refresher after a break, this four-week course is designed to build the foundations in a fun and supportive environment.

Hoopers is a low-impact dog sport that teaches dogs to work confidently at a distance, navigating hoops, tunnels and other obstacles while building teamwork, focus and handling skills.

It’s suitable for dogs of all breeds, ages and abilities and is particularly popular with:

• Dogs who enjoy running, chasing and being active
• Handlers looking for a fun hobby to enjoy with their dog
• Young dogs and older dogs who may find jumping-based sports too physically demanding
• Dogs who need an outlet for their energy and enthusiasm

Have you completed your Kennel Club Good Citizen Bronze, Silver or Gold Award and want to continue progressing?

Our new Platinum Class is designed as the next step, helping you and your dog continue building skills, confidence and teamwork. Wendy will be leading this class, with plenty of fun along the way whilst helping teams take their training to the next level.

⭕ NEW Hoopers

After lots of requests, Hoopers is back!

Cath will be starting with the foundations, making it perfect for beginners and those who have had a break from the sport. Hoopers is a low-impact sport suitable for dogs and handlers of all ages and abilities, including children accompanied by an adult. Dogs learn to navigate flowing courses of hoops, barrels, tunnels and chutes whilst building confidence, focus and a great bond with their handler.

One of our favourite summer activities is back!

Join us for a six-week scent detection challenge throughout the summer holidays. Each week we’ll release a new location and set of coordinates for you to explore as you and your dog seek out some of the quieter, hidden and most beautiful corners of Carmarthenshire whilst completing a different scent challenge.
