Paws & Play Gundogs

Paws & Play Gundogs Pet Gundog Training for any breed or cross breed of gundogs. All training is run by a qualified and accredited instructor.

Positive & Choice-based Gundog training, outside & all year round for all levels whether it be for fun & a hobby or to work in the field. Fun Pet Gundog Training using positive reinforcement, choice, and reward-based methods for any breed or crossbreed of gundog that are primarily pets or for those wanting to work their dog out in the field. The training helps to stimulate their brain, keeps them

physically & mentally fit, & helps to give you a good level of control over your dog. Labradors, spaniels, and other gundog breeds can and do make great pets, but it’s also important to remember that they have been selectively bred for generations to hunt and retrieve in partnership with us. Gundog style training helps to harness these instincts and drives of your pet gundog in order that you get the most from them as you’re fulfilling their hunting instincts.

Fireworks and the Moors Don’t Mix

As Bonfire Night approaches, we’d like to remind everyone: fireworks are not allowed on the moors, nearby roads or car parks.

Why? Because the moors are a special place - peaceful, wild and shared by many.

We kindly ask you to:

🎆 Think about fire: One spark from a firework could start a blaze that puts wildlife, habitats and people at risk.

🎆 Think about animals: Horses, livestock and wild creatures don’t understand fireworks. Loud bangs can cause panic, injury or distress.

🎆 Think about others: Many people come to the moors to escape - especially those with dogs or people who find fireworks stressful.

Some of the technicalities…

The use of fireworks is only allowed between 7am and 11pm, except on Bonfire Night when the cut off is midnight, and on Diwali, New Year and Chinese New Year, where the cut off is 1am (Fireworks Regulations 2004).

Using or firing fireworks in a public place, street or thoroughfare is not permitted under the Explosives Act 1875 (those areas of the moors with public access are deemed to be ‘public places’ within the definition of the Act). The Highways Act 1980 also prohibits discharging fireworks within 50 feet of a highway. Using fireworks in these places can lead to a substantial fine.

Under the Animal Welfare Act 2006, it is an offense to cause unnecessary suffering to any domestic or captive animal. Loud, unannounced firework displays in a rural setting could potentially fall under this, especially if they cause distress or injury.

Your thoughtful actions make a big difference - tonight and every night - helping to keep the moorland safe and enjoyable for everyone.

Thank you.

How cute is Lily... the little Vizsla pup who’ll be starting our Puppy Gundog Course later this week 🧡

She’s about to start learning all the foundations that make life with a young dog easier (and a lot more fun)... things like:

• Walking nicely on a lead
• Recall & off-lead connection
• Whistle cues
• Manners around the home
• Impulse control & focus
• And some gentle gundog games to get her instincts working the right way early on 🐾

If you’ve got a young pup and want to set them up for success — whether your goal’s a steady pet gundog & a well-mannered companion, or a working buddy — our next term will be January 2026 - why not join the mailing list so you don’t miss out.

They don’t just love to work — they need to.
It’s written into every fibre of who they are.

Leave that drive with nowhere to go, and it’ll find its own outlet — chewing, digging, pacing, barking… whatever gives that mind something to do.

They’re not being “naughty”.
They’re just under-worked mentally before they’re tired 🐾

Working-line Labs are bred for purpose — for structure, problem-solving, teamwork.
They’re the dogs who don’t just want your love… they want your teamwork.

So give them tasks.
Give them challenges.
Let them use the engine they were born with — before it runs off without direction.

Because owning a working-line Labrador isn’t about cuddles on the sofa…
It’s about giving that drive a job.

And when you get that balance right — you’ll see it.
That calm focus, that contentment, that partnership that feels different.

That’s the working-line magic. ✨

The moment every new puppy owner realises their cute little pup is part kangaroo, part tornado, part land shark.…

Two weeks in, you’re googling “when do puppies chill out?” with one sock left, no slippers, & a chewed-up remote.

Totally fine though. Totally. Fine. 😂

If you’re in that stage right now (or about to be), my Gundog Hub subscription’s got you — real training help, community & support that actually makes sense of the chaos.

Drop “puppy” in the comments & I’ll send you the link 🐾

From 1:1 beginnings to Foundation Gundogs…

From that very first 1-1, laying down the basics and helping channel all that cocker spaniel energy… to joining the Lead Work & Recall Course… to now, almost finishing Foundation Gundogs — what a journey it’s been for Alex & little Stanley.

Watching these two each week has been such a joy.
The patience, the hard work and progress, the partnership — it all shines through.
And hearing that what we work on in class is helping day-to-day life too - That’s the best bit 💚

Because that’s what it’s really about — building connection, calmness & communication that lasts beyond the training field.

If you’ve got a young or excitable spaniel (or any gundog breed!) and want to learn how to channel those natural instincts kindly & effectively… get in touch and join us for our 2026 term.

Our story

Positive Reinforcement & Choice-based Clicker Gundog training. Training is done outside & all year round for all levels whether it be for fun & a hobby or to work in the field.

The training we do will help strength the relationship you have with your dog so you can enjoy the time you spend together. The training is taught by qualified and accredited trainers so you know you and your dogs are in good hands.

Our group classes are small enabling you to get the best out of your training and also we can give you more individual attention. They are taught outside so your dogs are able to learn what to do in the ‘real world’ rather than in a village hall which also allows your dogs more space to learn and cope. We train using food and toy based reinforcers (rewards), choice-based methods so your dog knows by default what to do rather than being micro-managed all of the time.

We offer a range of group courses and fun workshops hosted by external trainers. For more details check out our website > www.pawsandplay.online
