⚠️ Heat Stroke Alert for Pets ⚠️

With the warm weather here, it’s important to remember that heat stroke can be deadly for our animals — and it can happen very quickly.

🐾 Signs of heat stroke in pets may include:
• Excessive panting or drooling
• Lethargy or collapse
• Bright red gums or tongue
• Vomiting or diarrhoea
• Uncoordinated movements or seizures

🚫 Never leave pets in a car, even for a minute — temperatures can rise to fatal levels in under 10 minutes.
💧 Always provide fresh water and shade.
🏃‍♀️ Avoid exercise in the heat of the day — walk dogs early morning or late evening.
🐕 Flat-faced breeds, older pets, young pets, overweight animals, and those with health conditions are at higher risk.

If you suspect heat stroke:
📞 Move your pet to a cool shaded area
💦 Wet their fur with cool (not icy) water
📞 Contact your vet immediately — heat stroke is a medical emergency.

Let’s keep our pets safe this summer 💛

⚠️ Avian Influenza (Bird Flu) ⚠️

There have been confirmed cases of Avian Influenza reported in nearby areas. This is a highly contagious disease affecting birds and potentially other animals. To help prevent further spread, please follow these important steps:

🔴 Do NOT touch or handle sick or injured birds.
🔴 Do NOT feed them.
🔴 Keep dogs and other pets well away from any bird you find.
🔴 Contact your nearest wildlife centre for advice — for our area, this is Secret World Wildlife Rescue.

❗️Important: Due to the increased risk in the area, if any bird is brought into the veterinary clinic, it will need to be humanely euthanised to minimise disease transmission. Leave healthy looking bird’s alone.

HEATSTROKE

Getting too hot can be dangerous for our four-legged friends. They can’t sweat (except through their paws), so they rely on panting to keep cool, which is much less effective when the weather is hot and humid.

If you’re considering taking your dog out for a walk in warmer weather, here are a couple of things to keep in mind.

🐶 Do the five-second tarmac test - Hold your hand on the tarmac for 5 seconds. If it’s too hot for you, then please do not walk your dog until later, to avoid burning their paws.

🐶 Walk your dog at cooler times of day – early morning and late evening are much cooler

🐶 Be particularly careful if your dog is old, overweight, suffers from breathing difficulties or is a flat faced breed like Pugs, French Bulldogs or English Bulldogs as their risk of heat stroke is higher.

Stay safe 🌞

🌟 Is it too hot to walk our dogs? 🌟

🐾 Dog walks in warm, sunny weather can be wonderful compensation for all the wet ones over the winter, but is it safe for our pets??

🐾 We all know the risk of heat exhaustion, heat stroke and potential death from leaving dogs in hot cars, but we see more cases of heat stroke in dogs that have been out on walks in the hot weather

🐾 Some individuals may be at greater risk from warm weather and so extra care is needed. These include:

🔻Young puppies
🔻Senior dogs
🔻Brachycephalic (flat-faced) dogs
🔻Those with heart disease
🔻Those with lung disease
🔻Overweight dogs
🔻Those with thick coats

🐾 All walks are not the same, walks where your dog can paddle or swim are lower risk, as are those in shady woods.

🐾 Training and games can be utilised to help keep them occupied and tire them out, as can paddling pools and frozen treats. And where possible walks can be timed for early mornings or late evenings when the weather is cooler.

🐾 However careful we are, sometimes our pets will start to overheat. Please make sure they always have access to shade and water and keep a close eye on them. If they are panting heavily, collapse, their gums or tongues appear blue/purple, become lethargic, become disoriented or start vomiting please immediately cool them with cold water and contact a vet.

As ever, if you are worried about your pet please call us, anytime.☎️

Remember, if in doubt, don't go out.

We are aware of a few videos circulating social media at the moment regarding ibuprofen ingestion in dogs.

Ibuprofen is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID). It is commonly used in people for the relief of pain and inflammation associated with aches and pains, headache, cramps and for the relief of mild fever.

Ibuprofen is a very widely available over-the-counter painkiller. Although well tolerated in people, dogs are very sensitive to ibuprofen and ingestion of even a relatively low dose can cause adverse effects on the gut and the kidneys. A very large overdose can even cause very rapid onset features including convulsions.

☎️Owners can call Animal PoisonLine on 01202 509000 if they are concerned about their pet.

We do not recommend the administration of any human medications without prior consultation with your veterinary surgeon.
