So you see how..
You might have got into this vicious circle of pulling.
You probably have been trying loads of ways of stopping your dog pulling.
And probably nothing has really worked.
Your dog is still pulling.
Every time your dog pulls on the lead,
We are practising pulling.
We are rehearsing this behaviour again and again.
We are often reinforcing the behaviour
By how excited we get when they pull -
We often bark lots when they pull…
We know that your dog is always doing their best -
And if your dog believes that pulling is what we do
And that sometimes the human barks and pulls back,
Well, they are going to get better and better at pulling!
Bless their hearts.
We need to find a new way
To break out of this vicious cycle.
We need to set things up differently,
Set up our relationship right,
Get the communication going well,
Get control of our dog,
Without physical restraint,
And without barking at them!
I want to control my dog with our relationship
And my leadership and our communication.
I want to control my dog with commands,
Setting up the behaviours that I want.
This is very different from physical restraint.
Remember there are two ways to control a dog -
Physical restraint
Or
Relationship.
If I set up the right relationship,
And the right communication,
If I practise the commands
And the behaviours we want,
THEN we can succeed.
When we have done all that
We can practise explaining to our dog exactly where we want them to walk.
Your dog will be delighted to oblige,
When they understand our appropriate relationship -
Remember that LEADERSHIP IS LOVE -
And when they understand what we are asking them to do -
Exactly where we are asking them to walk.
And then we repeat the same thing every time,
So that your dog forms a wonderful new pattern.
Of how to be with you,
And what you both do together.
You will both get so good at doing
The right thing together.
Believe me.
