Does your dog have a problem with other dogs?
It’s very unlikely to be the case.
If your dog is reacting to other dogs aggressively, It’s because they think thats the right thing to do!
Remember your dog is ALWAYS doing their best.
And if your dog is trying to see off other dogs on a walk, It’s absolutely because they think they have to protect you.
And they are likely to get better and better at d**g this job!
If your dog thinks that their role is to protect you, It’s because you have accidentally told them that is their job.
If you have a reactive dog you may have already tried To modify their behaviour around other dogs.
It can be hard to change the behaviour where it occurs.
People try food rewards, redirection, reassurance, and even reprimand.
The problem is that we are trying to modify a behaviour Which in itself is only a SYMPTOM of the problem.
It’s much easier to go for the CAUSE of the behaviour.
If my dog no longer sees their role as protecting ME
And understands that in fact I am leading and protecting
THEM,
Then they can start to feel safe, relax, and look to me for guidance.
When we change aspects of our relationship with our dog, And make sure that we are being:
The Kind, Calm, Confident and Competent(in Dog terms)
Leader,
Then we are offering them a peaceful and harmonious way of being:
The Calm, Confident, Perfectly Behaved (in Dog terms)
Follower.
And the result will be the best communication and partnership,
Successful and peaceful in the world together, Both of us in tune, And feeling good.
