How important and the impact a diet can have on you dogs health and wellbeing.

Over the last few months a link has been found between “dry eye”, kerato conjunctivitis sicca, and the feeding of Years dog food. Dry eye occurs because of a lack of tear production, it is painful and needs to be treated. Investigations by veterinary ophthalmologists into the recent increase in cases of severe, bilateral (both eyes) dry eye in breeds not usually at risk, has lead to the withdrawal of the food. If you have a dog who may be affected please contact your vet

🐾 IMPORTANT SERVICE & PRICING UPDATE – FROM 1 AUGUST

We have always tried to keep our fertility services competitively priced while maintaining the standard of equipment, consumables and service that we believe breeders should expect.

Unfortunately, following continued increases in operating costs and a further price increase from our progesterone equipment servicing and consumables supplier, we now need to make some changes.

Progesterone Testing – £40

From 1 August, the price of a progesterone test will increase from £35 to £40 per test.

We’ve worked hard to maintain the £35 price despite increasing costs, but we have reached the point where we can no longer absorb those increases.

We remain committed to using our Tosoh AIA-360 automated immunoassay analyser and maintaining the servicing, calibration, consumables and quality standards that support the service.

We won’t compromise the quality of our testing simply to offer the cheapest test.

Cell Analysis – £80 per season

We’re also making an important change to our cell analysis service.

We’ve listened, reviewed how the service is being used and, importantly, considered how we can encourage breeders to use cell analysis in the way it is intended – to track progression through the season.

From 1 August, Cell Analysis will cost £80 for the season.

The £80 fee is payable at the first appointment and covers the multiple cell analysis tests required to track that season.

There will therefore no longer be an option to book or pay for an individual single cell analysis test.

Why?

Because one isolated sample can only show us what we’re seeing on that particular day.

The real value comes from comparing samples and monitoring how the cells change as the bitch progresses through her season.

Moving to one inclusive price means we can test and track that progression without you having to pay separately every time we recommend another sample.

Cell Analysis – £80
✔️ One payment at the first appointment
✔️ Covers multiple tests during that season starting on day 6-8
✔️ Allows us to monitor progression
✔️ No additional charge each time we ask you to return
✔️ Designed around tracking rather than isolated testing

These changes take effect from 1 August.

We appreciate nobody likes a price increase, but our priority remains the same: providing breeders with a competent, reliable and accurate service using appropriate equipment and testing protocols.

Thank you, as always, for continuing to trust Calavey Pet Services with your breeding plans. 🐾

🐶🌿 ALGAE OIL FOR DOGS – OMEGA-3 GOODNESS WITHOUT THE FISH! 🌿🐶

Looking for an easy way to add essential Omega-3 fatty acids to your dog’s diet?

Algae Oil is a fantastic plant-based source of the important Omega-3 fatty acids DHA and EPA, providing many of the benefits traditionally associated with fish oil — without relying on fish. 🐟❌

✨ Why add Algae Oil to your dog’s diet?

🐾 Healthy Skin & Coat
Omega-3 fatty acids help support healthy skin and can promote a soft, glossy coat.

🦴 Joint & Mobility Support
EPA and DHA can help support normal joint function and mobility — particularly useful for active, working and older dogs.

🧠 Brain & Cognitive Support
DHA plays an important role in brain development and function, making Omega-3 particularly valuable throughout different stages of life.

❤️ Heart Health
EPA and DHA contribute to normal cardiovascular health and overall wellbeing.

👀 Eye & Vision Support
DHA is an important structural component of the retina and helps support normal eye function.

🐕 Great for Growing Puppies
DHA is particularly important during early development, supporting normal brain and visual development.

💪 Supports Active & Sporting Dogs
A great nutritional addition for dogs with busy, active lifestyles, helping support joints, general condition and recovery.

🌱 A Sustainable Alternative to Fish Oil
Algae is the original source of the Omega-3s that ultimately accumulate in fish, so algae oil provides DHA and EPA directly — without needing the fish in the middle!

✨ Simple. Sustainable. Packed with beneficial Omega-3.

Algae Oil is an easy addition to your dog’s daily diet and is suitable for dogs of all ages, from growing youngsters through to our golden oldies.

🐾 OVULATION TESTING – IT’S ABOUT MUCH MORE THAN A NUMBER! 🐾

It’s fantastic to see more breeders recognising the importance of ovulation testing and moving away from simply mating on a predetermined day of the season.

But there’s something equally important to understand:

Successful ovulation testing is about tracking a season – not just taking one progesterone test.

Every bitch is different, and every season can be different too.

There is no magic “Day 11”, “Day 12” or “Day 13” that tells us when your bitch has ovulated.

So why do we progesterone test?

Progesterone testing allows us to monitor the hormonal changes taking place during the season.

By taking appropriately timed samples and looking at the progression of progesterone, we can build a picture of the cycle and identify the important changes associated with the LH surge and ovulation.

This then helps us determine the most appropriate breeding window, taking into consideration that the eggs also need time to mature following ovulation.

That’s very different from simply asking:

“Is she ready?”

One test doesn’t always give us the whole story

Imagine bringing your bitch for her first test on Day 13 and receiving a progesterone result that indicates she has already ovulated.

Great – but when did she ovulate?

Was it yesterday? Two days ago? Three days ago?

Without earlier results showing how the progesterone level has progressed, we may have missed some of the information needed to pinpoint that timing accurately.

That’s why, when we recommend returning for another test, we’re not testing unnecessarily. We’re gathering the information needed to track the season properly.

The equipment matters too

At Calavey Pet Services, our progesterone testing isn’t performed using one of the small rapid-test analysers commonly found in canine fertility services.

We use the Tosoh AIA-360 automated immunoassay analyser – professional laboratory equipment designed for quantitative hormone analysis.

Rapid fluorescence immunoassay systems, such as the Wondfo Finecare platform, use a different testing technology and are designed as rapid point-of-care systems.

We made a significant investment in the Tosoh because we wanted our progesterone service to be built around professional laboratory equipment, proper maintenance, calibration and quality control.

But even the best equipment needs the right information.

A machine can accurately analyse the sample you give it – it cannot tell us what your bitch’s progesterone was two days earlier if she wasn’t tested.

Ovulation testing is a partnership

Calavey Pet Services will provide the testing, interpret the results, track the progression and advise you on the appropriate next steps.

We need you to play your part too.

Start testing at the appropriate point, return when advised and don’t assume that because your bitch was ready on Day 12 last season, she’ll be ready on Day 12 this time.

Our aim isn’t simply to give you a progesterone number.

Our aim is to understand your bitch’s cycle and give you the best possible information on which to base your breeding decisions.

🐾 TEST. TRACK. UNDERSTAND. THEN BREED 🐾
