After an extra hot extra-long weekend, a very blousy bunch for my coffee table. Of course I should really have made a note of which rose was which and which peony was which, but instead I just snipped away w***y nilly

A year in flowers, week 20

Inspired by a visit to Hembury Cottage Flowers on Friday, I've been practicing bouquet making.

It's interesting how different the bouquet looks in the photographs compared to real life... By my arranging standards this little bouquet is 'packed tight' but it reads much more loose and airy in the photos. And whilst I did embrace quite a bubblegummy palette it looks much more so in pictures.

What do you think... What would you like to see me practice next in the bridal bouquet series?

How long should you expect your flowers to last?

A question I grapple with.. On the one hand I absolutely want to give my customers flowers they can enjoy over a good length of time. On the other hand I also want to include some of those more ephemeral garden beauties that a supermarket or florist can't stock... Sweet peas, dahlias, poppies...

What I aim for is that every bouquet will still look good five days in, and with some gentle editing (removing spent flowers and rearranging) you'll still get a good few days from there as some other things continue to open to take the place of those that fade.

To give you a feel for what that looks like, here is my current bouquet on day 2 (left) and day 7 (right)

Caring for your flowers:
- I tend to just use plain water, but if you want to spoil them you can add a teaspoon or two of sugar and a good glug of vinegar
- Change the water every few days and ideally give the vase a little rinse out as you do
- After about 4 or 5 days you may want to give the bottom of the stems a little snip, and 'edit' as needed

What's blooming this week at Turn Wilder:
Snapdragons, larkspur, orlaya, alliums, hesperis, lunaria, last ranunculus, anemones, first sweet peas and....drum roll... the very first peonies.

I planted twenty peonies last winter, but in their second summer here at Steep Hill I'll still be cutting very very sparingly...time will tell if that means a dozen stems or twice that... I'm eyeing them greedily.
