Today was all about remedial shoeing. Started with a Thoroughbred who needed pink 3-degree wedge 3D pads for those classic low heels. Then a horse with sidebone and ringbone got fitted with black 3D pads. Wrapped up the day helping a laminitic pony with a set of MoReAid squish pads.

Today, I decided it was time to step away from this old shire—he’s just become too much for my back to handle. I broke the news to the owner and passed on the contact details of a younger farrier who’s keen to take on the job. Later, I received this kind message from the owner:

Today’s Remedial Shoeing Case

Diagnosis:

• Bilateral Sidebone – Ossification of both lateral cartilages in the horse’s feet.
• Ringbone – Bony growth around the pastern or coffin joints.

Shoeing Approach (Both Front Feet):

• Applied Mustad Libero shoes with medial and lateral branches beveled to help reduce concussion.
• Fitted with 3D pads and packed using ComfortMix Hoof Cushion ZNO — a hoof packing material designed to minimize concussion, support even weight distribution, and promote hoof health.
• Contains Zinc Oxide, which also helps prevent thrush.
