Pooches before Profits

At Wagtastic Walks our company ethos is 'Pooches before Profits'. This means that (amongst other things) although we're legally permitted to walk up to six dogs per walk, we choose to follow the Professional Dog Walkers' Guidelines which recommend a maximum of four dogs per walk. Your dog's safety and happiness is always at the forefront of everything that we do. We are dog owners ourselves and understand that they are family members and very precious to you.

Saw about one million doggos on holiday, but none of them were our Willow or our Wagtastic dogs! Back to it tomorrow!

Got a lovely two weeks of holiday time - relaxing, spending time with family and all the usual bits and bobs.
Thought I’d start my time off wisely by doing some reading and having a cuppa in the garden!
Got some exciting things happening in September - can’t wait to get it all going!
Hope everyone has a great couple of weeks - see you soon!

I’m lucky enough that over the last few years I’ve walked past this little copse of trees a number of times and every time I expect to see a gold robot, a Wookie, some stormtroopers and perhaps even an imperial walker. This time though, just Arthur doing his best to look like an Ewok.

No, YOU pretend to be Han Solo on Endor. (Pew-pew).

When we started our little business back in 2020 it was just Sophie and we had one walk a day at 9am. We’ve only ever walked a maximum of four dogs on these walks.
We now offer a variety of care options and walks, and one of these is our 11am walk.
We never intended to have an 11 am walk, and when it started we didn’t have a huge amount of dogs on it. As it happens, it’s a great time of day to get your dog exercised if you’re out of the house for longer periods. It breaks up the day very nicely for them and can help prevent boredom and stress. We have a variety of dogs on these walks, and some of the 11am walks have naturally just become a lovely calm walk with older, more sensible dogs! Here’s one of our 11am crews from today. Calmer more sensible dogs (and Apollo, pretending to be calm and sensible!).
If your dog would benefit from a mid morning walk with some friends, please get in touch!

We spend a huge amount of our time walking a variety of different dogs. We get to know these dogs very well and they become like our family and friends! They each have there own personality, and sometimes these are heavily influenced by breed traits as well as how they are used to being cared for (some may suggest spoiled…) at home. We treat them all differently, according to their needs and likes.
One thing that we have found really interesting is how some of them treat us differently, too.
For example Max, a beagle who is very much a natural leader of our groups, tends to wander far and wide, nose to the floor exploring, when I’m in charge. However, when he’s out on a walk with Sophie, he tends to stay closer to her and is always coming back to check she’s ok. Protecting her? Who knows, but it sure feels like he’s taking better care of her than he is of me (hopefully only because he supposes I don’t need protecting!). I’m pretty grateful for the rascal for this.
Equally we have dogs who will not leave my side but go further afield when out with Sophie, and there are many other ways that they treat us slightly differently.
Personally, I find this really interesting and it just goes to show how amazing these animals really are!

Four is our magic number!

When we started this business in 2020, we decided that we would never walk more than four dogs at any time (per human!) whenever possible. We even called it our “pooches before profits” ethos when we first got started!
There are many reasons why we do this.
Firstly, and very importantly, it is far easier for us to monitor and control four dogs instead of six. I use six as an example because it’s the amount that insurances will cover, in our experience, for one person to have with them.
Many canine charities (such as The Dogs Trust) also recommend four as the optimal number of dogs to have in a group. It creates a far more relaxed and stress free environment for them.
This number also makes it easy for us to work with our dogs on things like recall and making sure they keep their attention on us when we need them to. (There’s lots out there to distract nosy dogs!).
If you think your dog would like this relaxed group situation, please get in touch with us so we can help you and your dog!

Always remember;
Rest
Shade
Water.

Old dogs, big dogs, thick furred dogs will suffer worst!

Be safe all!
