Our little retreat for families at The Haven in Bangor. Spring equinox seems like the perfect time to get into nature, get moving with some fun family yoga and plant some seeds.
While we know of other farms where you can 'get up close and personal' with the livestock, we're pretty sure there's nothing quite like Castlescreen's Goat Yoga Experience! If you love animals, recognise the benefits of a gentle stretch and enjoy sharing a good laugh with like-minded people the Goat...

So last week a very hateful woman commented on a post of mine.
She told me (and everyone else) that we were raising ‘entitled snowflakes’.
It’s been in my mind ever since, so I’ll be honest-
I have a really hard time thinking badly of snowflakes.
I mean, have you seen them??
I know what the term means colloquially.
But literal language is also a big strength of mine.
I’m only too happy to take that person’s horrible comment and turn it into something nice.
So here are some of the things I appreciate about snowflakes, and some ways in which we are, indeed, alike (and thank you, hateful owner of that childcare centre, for the inspiration):
❄️ Each snowflake is utterly unique and beautiful- not unlike our neurodivergent kids. Don’t assume that any of us are identical.
❄️ Snowflakes are dazzling and awe-inspiring when in the right environment, much like us. Get the supports in place and watch us shine.
❄️ We can be extremely sensitive to different things, but this sensitivity is not a weakness. It is a strength. Because we care so much we are pushed to make change. I do it here everyday. Would I prefer to be insensitive? Ew. No. When did insensitivity ever help anyone?
❄️ The world is often cold but we many of us still find joy spinning and swirling through the wind. We are good at seeing the beauty.
❄️ We may not look like much from a distance, but look closer and pay attention- you will see our magnificence. We are far more intricate than most people realise.
❄️ And finally, it is a mistake to discount the value of our voices.
Because when you get a bunch of us together, we become a blizzard.
Anyway.
I won’t be letting horrible people call the shots here.
If you are accommodating and supporting your neurodivergent kid, teaching them sensory safety and self advocacy, teaching them to be proud of their neurodivergent brain- you are doing the very best job. Don’t let anyone tell you otherwise.
Em 🌈❄️✌️

You will have a chance to meet and chat with other parents and guardians and of course have a hot cuppa and a bun! This is a FREE event however a ticket is required as places are limited due to space. You do not need to be attending our groups to attend. This is open to any parent or guardian of a child with additional needs. Bookings are live via The Sensory Submarine www.thesensorysubmarine.com or send us a DM.
We have such beautiful surroundings right on our doorstep which act as a perfect regulation tool for when out of the usual school/work routine.
Now we are back after the festive break, time to come and find out more about how nature can be your co-facilitator in supporting the development, health, and wellbeing of those you work with.

Small Furries Therapy & Boarding is run by Clare with some help from the Gardiner’s (adults, children & animals!)
Clare is an occupational therapist who has worked with children with learning difficulties, physical difficulties and mental health difficulties for over 15 years. Clare also works with children in the care system. Clare is an advid animal lover and gardener who believes that animals and nature are a wonderful therapeutic medium. Clare’s love of animals extends to the family’s two dogs, 14 rabbits, 20 chickens, 8 ducks, doves and racing pigeons! Clare also has lived experience of parenting a child with neurodevelopmental and emotional difficulties.
Clare provides occupational therapy assessment and intervention primarily to children, and can also offer therapeutic education sessions on a range of topics, such as the environment, animal care and horticulture. Parent sessions for “The Just Right State” (E.Bhreathnach) can be organised at the request of exisiting support groups or services.
In addition to therapeutic services, the whole family help to look after a variety of animals (furry, feathered or scaly) at Small Furries HQ! Small Furries Boarding started as a way of helping some of the Small Furries family (animals & humans) with social interaction, and, because we recognised that we did not want to leave our dogs (at all!) in kennels to facilitate holidays. Kookie our female German Shepherd has benefitted greatly from being around other dogs.
Small Furries Boarding offers ‘home from home’ care to each animal, ensuring high quality animal supervision & care which meets the emotional needs of the animal and their human! We know how much precious pets are missed when their owner is away, so we send regular photo and video messages to show the human just how little their pet is missing them! We are happy to report that whilst our clients might have fun on their holiday, they are overjoyed to be reunited with their family when the humans return!
