Changing weather patterns mean fluke risk timings will vary year on year for every farm. The easiest and most reliable way to understand the fluke risk on your farm is via diagnosis.

There are several ways to diagnose a fluke challenge in sheep and cattle, with different tests suitable for different situations. Working closely with your vet is recommended as they will be able to advise which tests you should be carrying out.

The impact of liver fluke in sheep can vary depending on the level of challenge and the number of infectious metacercariae (fluke cysts) ingested by the animal.

🟢 To stay in the green zone, avoid grazing problem areas and use a suitable treatment to treat fluke if required, but note that treatment won't prevent re-infection, so routine monitoring is recommended.

🟡 In the amber zone, sheep may not show visible signs of suffering, but weight gain, milk production, fertility, and feed conversion rates could all be affected.

🔴 In the red zone, acute disease can lead to severe liver damage and, in some cases, death. Whereas, chronic disease presents symptoms like loss of condition, bottle jaw, and anaemia, which are similar to Haemonchus. This is why accurate diagnosis is crucial before treatment.

Where are the mud snail hotspots? 🐚 🐌

Mud snails are the intermediate hosts of fluke before it reaches the final hosts, sheep and cattle.
Like their name suggests, the mud snail is found in damp and wet areas on the farm, meaning the
prevalence of liver fluke will be higher in these areas.

There are a few practical ways you can help avoid a fluke challenge:
1. Avoid grazing these problem areas such as by using electric fencing, grazing elsewhere if
possible, or bringing animals indoors during the autumn and winter months
2. Avoid areas becoming muddy and wet by fixing leaky troughs and maintaining drainage for example
