Today is National Zoo Awareness Day - a day to highlight the vital role modern zoos play in wildlife conservation, education and scientific research🐾

We caught up with our Head Zookeeper, Gemma, to find out more about the important work we do, both here at Drusillas and around the world🌍

💚 Can you help Mary and Eunice stay in education?

For children growing up in the Maasai communities of Amboseli, Kenya, staying in school isn’t always guaranteed. Drought, poverty and rising costs can force families to make difficult choices, with girls particularly vulnerable to leaving school early.

Since 2025, Drusillas has been supporting Sherlyn, a young Maasai girl with big dreams of becoming an aeronautical engineer - but she’s just one of many children who need support.

Through our partnership with Kenyan conservation group Shades of Amboseli, we’re helping children stay in education while also supporting vital community projects, such as repairing a borehole providing water for people and livestock.

We believe protecting wildlife goes hand in hand with supporting the people who live alongside it; and are proud to support Shades of Amboseli’s vital work preserving Maasai cultural heritage, strengthening climate resilience, and conserving wildlife in the Amboseli ecosystem of Southern Kenya.

Shakira, Shakira! 💃🏻🐒🖤

We’re delighted to announce that Jamundi, one of our Colombian black spider monkeys, has welcomed a beautiful baby girl! Born on Father’s Day, this tiny tot is almost two months old and is already starting to explore her surroundings alongside mum 🥰

After lots of deliberation, our keepers decided to name her Shakira, inspired by the Colombian singing superstar, who was born in Barranquilla!

Following the arrival of Kendall in April to mum Moa, our spider monkey family is growing! Classified as Vulnerable on the IUCN Red List, these successful births are a huge milestone, and we couldn’t be more excited to watch these little ones grow 🖤
