Curious why follicle numbers often don’t equal oocyte numbers?

In most mammals, the follicles are located at the outer part of the o***y and can ovulate from almost anywhere on the surface.
But not in mares 🐴❌

It can be disappointing to recover fewer oocytes than the number of follicles you saw on the ultrasound scan.

But there is a scientific explanation for why this can happen.

We’ve tried to explain it in this carousel.

OPU and ICSI are elective procedures. They are not performed for the mare’s own health.

That means we have an extra responsibility to put her welfare first 🐎

For us, that responsibility is not just something we talk about.

Four years ago, we developed our own Code of Ethics to guide our daily practice. It covers animal welfare, transparency with owners and stallion owners, genetic responsibility and respect for the limits of nature.

And we keep learning.

We contribute to research on ethics and welfare and participate in international veterinary networks focused on equine reproduction and mare welfare.

Because responsible breeding is not a finished goal.
It’s something we keep working on 💙

We’ve traditionally preferred to schedule OPU between a mare’s oestrous periods.

Why?

Because mares often have fewer follicles during oestrus, which can mean fewer oocytes to retrieve.

But new research presented in Kentucky is challenging the idea that more follicles is always better 🧐

The research suggests that follicle size may be linked to the developmental potential of the oocyte. So while a mare in oestrus may have fewer follicles, the oocytes we retrieve may have greater developmental potential 💡

This gives us a new perspective on how we look at OPU timing.

Where we previously might have been more hesitant about OPU during oestrus, we’re now looking at the situation differently.

The correct answer is A) 1

During ICSI, just one s***m cell is selected and injected directly into the oocyte.

Because we select the s***m cell ourselves, we use several selection steps to mimic some of the natural selection that would normally take place in the mare’s reproductive tract.

The goal? To select the best possible candidate for fertilization 🔬🐎
