Keeping and breeding of unusual snakes

A few of you have asked how my unusually coloured house snake is doing. I currently have three individuals displaying this interesting peach to reddish phenotype, with varying colour intensity. I've provisionally named this colour variation "Peach", although the genetic mechanism behind it is still unknown. There's still a long way to go before we figure that out! For now, I can at least show you a photo taken in natural daylight.

This weekend, I attended the fantastic Herpetological Symposium 2026 in Nitra, Slovakia. It was a great honour not only to contribute what I hope was an interesting presentation on the practical aspects of keeping Natricidae, but also to help co-organise such a wonderful event. Not to mention the opportunity to catch up with so many amazing people. Thank you, and see you all again next year, friends!

Today was the final check of my blind snakes before brumation. All the animals seem to be in good condition, so hopefully we'll see them all again in the spring.

I really enjoy keeping these snakes. Hierophis gemonensis is a dietary generalist, but insects make up a large part of its diet. At some localities, insects may account for almost 100% of their food intake, and feeding them is great fun!

Thanatosis is a defensive mechanism in which a snake feigns death in response to a threat. It involves remaining motionless, going limp, and, in some species, rolling onto its back or opening its mouth. Playing dead may deter a predator or reduce its interest in potential prey. In this case, the snake displaying this behaviour is a Balkan grass snake (Natrix natrix moreotica), which clearly wasn't a fan of being handled by me.

These mangrove babies hatched just yesterday, and they’re already showing the feisty attitude these snakes are known for.

Today, my Hierophis gemonensis were moved into their permanent enclosure.

The first to go into brumation are some of the smallest and cutest residents – Natrix helvetica hatchlings. Hopefully, a short brumation will help improve their appetite.
