Boaedon perisilvestris hatchlings begin to eat for the first time. It is a very fascinating species, much larger than the closely related B. fuliginosus. As adults they resemble B. capensis in size, but are not as robust. The juveniles are also nice sized and therefore can eat few days old pinky mice without problems.

Natrix maura, checking during the two-week nap

Several species of snakes from temperate latitudes hatch just before the onset of cold weather and therefore take their first food only after emerging from brumation. I have used this adaptation with success in viperine snakes breeding, where the hatchlings begin to eat much better after a short brumation. In this way I have managed to completely eliminate anorexic babies or babies that must have to start on live food.
