🐾❤️ Tito Needs a Little Extra Help ❤️🐾
Our Compassionate Care English Bulldog, Tito, was at the vet Friday after we’ve noticed he’s been struggling more with his front right leg & paw, navigating stairs.
For those who weren’t following us back in 2021, here’s a little recap of Tito’s story.
When Tito arrived in our care as a stray, he was in absolutely heartbreaking condition. His nails were so severely overgrown that one nail on his right front paw had curled completely back into his skin, continued growing into the bone of his toe, and ultimately fractured the toe bone itself.
The damaged nail had to be removed, but the long-term effects remain. Tito has very splayed toes, and much of the underside of that paw is skin tissue rather than protective paw pads. As a result, walking on uneven or rocky surfaces is uncomfortable for him.
Five years later, as Tito ages, arthritis is adding another layer of discomfort to a foot that was permanently damaged by years of neglect before he came into rescue.
We don’t know Tito’s exact age. He could be anywhere from 7 to 11 years old, with our best guess being around 9–10. Because he arrived as a stray, we’ll never know for certain.
To help improve his comfort and mobility, we’re making some adjustments to his pain plan. Tito is back on Cartrophen, and we are adding Pregabalin (Lyrica) to help better manage his chronic pain. We’ll give this new routine a few months and carefully monitor how he responds. If we don’t see enough improvement, we may need to explore additional options, including injectable meds to the affected joints.
Friday’s vet visit, X-rays, Cartrophen, & Pregabalin came to $615.
We know senior dogs don’t always receive the same attention as the younger dogs in rescue, but Tito is one of those special souls who reminds us why we do this work.
