Many people believe that sticking their hand in their dog’s food and randomly taking items away will help prevent resource guarding. Unfortunately when done incorrectly, this actually encourages resource guarding.
Unless you are very well versed in reading dog body language you’re likely missing what your dog is telling you and what you’re actually teaching them. More often than not, your dog isn’t okay with your hand being there; they’re tolerating it for the time being. Meaning they can easily escalate over time.
Tolerating it often leads to a dog expecting a negative experience around food. Leading to higher excitement levels around resources, negative energy around these items and an increased chance of feeling like they need to resource guard.
Just because your dog doesn’t growl, or wags their tail while you put your hand in their food or take items away, doesn’t mean they’re not resource guarding.

Pup-date/review from: Pat (and Chewy! 🐾)

Pat (and Chewy🐶) booked 3 training sessions with PawPrint Method Dog Training. Their main goals were to: solidify recall (coming when called) and work on calmer greetings. Sounds like they have put their greetings to the test and it was a success! She also informed me in person that they haven’t had any issues with recall even in real life, off-leash situations since working with me.

I love seeing the dedication you put into your dogs and your progress reports!
